Can the Warriors be stopped?

It’s been one of those magical seasons.

While records are meant to be broken, some seem impossible to even reach. The 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls won 72 games on their way to an NBA title and during the 20-year span, that record hasn’t been threatened. No other team had won 70 or more games until this season.

Six years removed from its Bay Area counterpart’s magical run to win the 2010 World Series, the Golden State Warriors are making last year’s remarkable performance seem so distant. This year’s Warriors have been able to break all kinds of NBA as well as franchise records, led by sharpshooter Stephen Curry. When’s the last time an NBA team has been so dominant from 3-point range?

No team has been so commanding and overpowering since the Los Angeles Lakers during Kobe Bryant’s prime. And we thought last year’s team was so special, especially when Golden State and Cleveland battled in six games for the NBA crown.

This year’s squad is more experienced and extremely lethal on both sides of the ball. Expect a great postseason, which begins on Saturday.

Big weekend for baseball

The Greenwave finds its baseball team in a similar position to 2013. Fallon has dropped two series after breezing past South Tahoe and Truckee and visits Elko this weekend for a crucial three-game set.

After losing two games each to Spring Creek and Fernley, Fallon will need to salvage at least one game this weekend to keep within striking distance of the division crown, but a series win is obviously the goal.

Fallon, though, experienced a similar trend three years ago before the season switches to three-game series. This year, though, Fallon has the talent to retain its high standing in the Division I-A. Give Lester de Braga’s team some time and Fallon will be going strong into the postseason next month.

Rock and Jock Basketball Extravaganza

Fallon’s boys basketball program will host The Battle of the Alumni Tournament on April 30. All proceeds go to the program.

The tournament is double elimination and costs $100 per team. Men and women can participate. The tournament begins in the morning with the championship games at 5 p.m. for faculty vs. boys varsity, 6:15 p.m. for the lady alumni battle and 7:30 p.m. for the men’s alumni game.

There will also be a 3-point contest for $15 and it’s open to everyone.

For more information, contact the tournament Facebook page: “Rock and Jock Basketball Extravaganza and Alumni Tournament.”

Top Gun hosts first points race

After Rattlesnake Raceway kicked off the dirt-track racing earlier this month, drag racing at Top Gun Raceway will have its first points race this weekend.

The raceway, which is located 14 miles south of Fallon on Highway 95, features many divisions racing on the quarter-mile track.

It’s a great opportunity to watch good competition as racers tally points for each race of the season, which concludes on Oct. 15. And don’t forget the NHRA Division 7 National Open returns to Fallon in June as part of Octane Fest.
