Fallon competes in Del Oro Invite

The road to the regional track meet continues to get shorter after Fallon crossed the midway mark at an out-of-state meet on Friday.

The girls frosh/soph team finished fifth in the Del Oro Invitational (Loomis, Calif.) after amassing 38.33 points, while its varsity division picked up 3.75 points to finish 21st. The boys recorded a 10th-place finish in the varsity division with 18 points, while the frosh/soph group finished 15th with 3.25 points.

Senior Tristen Thomson competed solely in the Mt. Sac Relays (Norwalk, Calif.) over the weekend, placing fifth in the 800 with a personal best of 1:55.20.

Fallon returns to the Silver State this weekend for the Carson Invitational. The regional meet is in four weeks at Yerington.

TJ Mauga had the best day of his junior season after taking second in the discus at 157 feet, 5 inches, and finishing third in the shot put at 45-7.5. Taylen Cordes finished 16th in the shot put at 38-1.

Colton Peterson finished 22nd in the 100-meter dash in 12.20 followed by Oscar Garcia in 27th in 12.41. Drake Copley ended in 23rd in 25.11 in the 200 and took 24th in the 400 in 1:01.91.

Joseph Terry placed in the top five in the 1600 after running a 4:52.08 to take fourth and he also ran a 2:10.91 to take 18th in the 800. Mario Ugalde placed 12th in the 3200 after running a 10:33.78 and Reid Clyburn finished 16th in the 300 hurdles in 46.49 and Davis Koenig took 18th in 47.05. Jordan Boothe was 26th in 50.81. Clyburn and John Kirkland were in the top 25 of the 110 hurdles preliminaries.

The 4x100 relay of Clyburn, Copley, Peterson and Broder Thurston took ninth in 46.53, while the 4x400 team of Clayton Steelmon, Trevor East, Trevor Brown and JR Demillo was 10th in 4:04.49.

Garcia finished 14th in the high jump at 5-4, followed by Kirkland in 21st at 5-2. Cade Vercellotti cleared 5 feet for 24th. Thurston ended in 17th in the pole vault at 9 feet, while Koenig finished 16th in the triple jump at 35-7 followed by Kirkland in 18th at 35 feet. Dustin Hopkins and Koenig each finished 27th and 30th in the long jump.

The frosh/soph boys saw positive results with Isaiah Williams finishing 11th in the 800 and Steelmon finishing 16th in the 400. Williams was also ninth in the 1600 at 5:03.44 and Justin Cathey took ninth in the 3200 at 11:27.48.

Other standouts included Trevor East and Trevor Brown taking 12th and 16th in the 300 hurdles, Cathey taking fourth in the high jump and East finishing fifth in the triple jump.

Lady Wave youngsters finish strong

The core of the Fallon girls this year has been the underclassmen and Friday’s Del Oro meet was no exception.

“I want them to have success especially when we go to California,” Fallon girls coach Paul Orong said about keeping his underclassmen in the frosh/soph division. “With our injuries, we’re trying to get back to normal.”

Competing for the first time this season after spending the last couple of months skiing competitively, Jordan Beyer finished fourth in the 100 finals at 13.57 in the frosh/soph division. Melanie Nuckolls took seventh in the varsity 1600 in 6:05.35 while Chloe Overlie finished seventh in the frosh/soph division in 6:01.15. Emily Evett was 16th in the frosh/soph 200 in 29.49.

“She’s getting there. She knows,” Orong said of Beyer. “We’re just trying to get her back into running from skiing. It was a good thing for her. She was a little disappointed that she didn’t win the whole thing.

She’ll get better.”

Shelby Hickox took third in the frosh/soph 300 hurdles in 55.70, followed by Allie Lister in fifth at 57.96. Hickox also finished 12th in the 100 hurdles in 20.51 followed by Elizabeth Ebner (14th, 20.58) and Lister (16th, 21.18). CC Ramos was Fallon’s top finisher in the varsity division after running a 20.61 in the 100 (20th) and 1:00.37 in the 300 (22nd).

Fallon’s 4x100 relay teams took fifth in the frosh/soph and 12th in the varsity.

LeAnn Stands placed fifth in the varsity discus at 103-2 and sixth in the shot put at 32-10. Evett placed 10th in the frosh/soph high jump at 4-2 and Cassidy East was 12th in the varsity division at 4-6.

Brynlee Shults dominated the long and triple jumps after finishing second (14-9) and third (31-3), respectively, in the frosh/soph division. East was the top varsity finisher in both jumps, taking 10th in the triple at 28-9 and 15th in the long at 13-9. Allie Lister was third in the frosh/soph pole vault at 7 feet and Whitney Skabelund, who hasn’t competed since the Fallon meet last month, finished fifth in the varsity division at 8 feet.

“We’re going to try this week,” Orong said about getting Skabelund back to 100 percent competing. “She only four-stepped the pole vault. Misaki Claire is still out. We lost Sierra Hickox last week and we’ll hopefully get her back this weekend. If it’s not one girl, it’s another. Hopefully, we’ll finish with a flourish at the end.”
