Carson softball coach Shane Quilling was worried about a letdown against cellar-dwelling Hug, and he shouldn’t have been.

The Senators steamrolled the Hawks, 13-1 and 14-1, Tuesday afternoon at Carson. The two wins give Carson some nice momentum heading into Thursday’s home game against Bishop Manogue at 3:45 p.m. Carson has won three of its last four games.

“We were able to get two wins that we needed,” Quilling said. “The game on Thursday against Manogue is a big game. The girls played well today and did some good things. Kassidy (Cooley) got some big hits and pitched well in the second game, and Faith (Bigelow) hit a homer. I thought Lauren (Lemburg) did a nice job (2-hitter) in the first game.”

The scores weren’t indicative of Carson’s dominance. Several times during both games, Carson stepped off bases; gave up outs.

Carson started fast in the opener, scoring three times on four walks, a hit batter and Bailey Allen’s run-scoring double. Allen went 4-for-4, scored four times and drove in three runs.

The Senators added three more in the second on singles by Lemburg and Allen, two walks and a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Tezia Boice.

Carson opened the fourth with a double by Elise Brady, a single by Lemburg, a run-scoring single by Allen, a run-scoring double by Camiell Simpson, a run-scoring hit by Bigelow and a hit batter. When the smoke cleared Carson had a 10-0 lead.

In the second game, Carson scored five in the first and five in the third en route to a 12-0 lead after three. The Senators added two in the fourth to go ahead 14-0. Hug scored its only run in the top of the fifth.

Bigelow went 3-for-5 with five RBI, while Cooley went 2-for-4 with six RBI, three coming on a bases-loaded double. Simpson went 3-for-3, Allen went 2-for-4 an Brady went 2-for-3. Cat Linkul had two RBI.

Vikings knock off Dayton

DAYTON — South Tahoe struck for eight runs in the first two innings en route to a 10-2 win over the Dust Devils Tuesday afternoon in a Northern 1A game.

Tiana Snow drove in a run in the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Elizabeth Vincent accounted for the other run. Snow, Grace Dickenson and Hill had a hit apiece.

Caleigh Onstott pitched well after the first two innings in pitching her first complete game.

“Was good to see the girls play well after giving up eight early,” Dayton coach Dusti Houk said. “They never give up in any game they have played this year. They showed heart and determination.”

McQueen beats Douglas

MINDEN — Austin Thomas threw a complete game four-hitter and Brendan Yawn hit 4-for-4 as McQueen pulled out an important 6-3 win Tuesday at Douglas.

McQueen (8-13-1 overall, 5-8 league) scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Alex Scott, the No. 8 hitter in the Lancers’ lineup, drove home the go-ahead run on a two-out single and Zach Ball followed with a two-run double.

Yawn delivered an RBI single in the third inning to tie the score 1-all and doubled home another run to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead in the fifth.

Thomas only needed 71 pitches as he retired 18 batters on fly balls to earn his fourth win of the conference season for the Lancers.

Isaiah Schat absorbed the loss for Douglas (7-15 overall, 3-10 league), as he allowed four hits and four walks to go with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

Hayden Keller hit 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles to lead the Tigers offensively. Keller doubled one run home and then scored on an error to tie the score 3-all in the bottom of the fifth.

The teams will complete their two-game series Thursday in Reno.

South Tahoe edges Dayton

DAYTON — The Vikings scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth to grab a 9-5 win over the Dust Devils.

“This was a winnable game that we let get away from us,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said.

“Walks and errors ended up being the difference. We stranded nine runners, and that’s not good enough to win. I think the bye week hurt us. Even though we got healthier after a 10-day layoff, you can only simulate games to a certain degree.”

Gage Duke went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, Trevor Burrows went 2-for-3, Dylan Baker went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Jesse Schmidt went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Dayton hosts Sparks this weekend for a three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m.
