Prep roundup: Carson baseball rolls to victory

RENO — Carson High scored nine times in the first inning and coasted to a 17-6 win over North Valleys Thursday afternoon.

The win gave CHS a series sweep and a 10-4 record entering Saturday’s home doubleheader against Wooster. First pitch, weather permitting, is set for 11 a.m.

“We played well on defense except for one inning (the second) when we let them back in the game. We had a hit batter, an error and we gave up a couple of hits,” coach Bryan Manoukian said. “We need to put teams away when we have the chance.

“It was a positive sign to see Terek, Jace, Bryce and Abel contribute in a big way driving in runs.”

The Senators pounded out 17 hits, including a 4-for-5 effort by Abel Carter and a 3-for-5 effort by Cody Azevedo. Carter had a homer and drove in three runs while Azevedo had two RBI. Connor Pradere, Terek Been, Jace Keema and Bryce Moyle all had two hits apiece. One of Keema’s hits was a homer.

Pradere was hit by a pitch and Azevedo singled to start the game. After Kyle Krebs walked, Been cleared the bases with a double. Keema followed with a homer to make it 5-0. Carter doubled and scored on Moyle’s triple. Pradere had a run-scoring single and Azevedo followed with a two-run single.

Carson added one in the second, but the Panthers cut the lead in half with five in the bottom of the inning. Carson scored two in the third to make it 12-5. North Valleys added one in the fourth to make it 12-6. Carson scored five in the sixth on six hits.

CHS starter Trevor Edis worked the first four innings and Cole McDannald finished up with two scoreless innings.

“Trevor battled, but he had 70 pitched through four so I put Cole in,” Manoukian said. “Cole threw well again. He gave up a hit and then retired six in a row.”

McQueen edges Tigers

RENO — A six-run fifth-inning rally lifted McQueen to a come-from-behind 9-6 victory at home against Douglas Thursday afternoon.

McQueen (9-13-1 overall, 6-8 league) erased a 5-1 deficit to complete its sweep of a two-game series between teams competing for the final seed into the Northern Division I Region Tournament. Douglas dropped to 3-11 (7-16 overall) in the conference standings.

Jayden Foster collected two hits and Haden Keller drove in two runs for the Tigers, who scored twice in the first and fourth innings to take their 5-1 lead.

VARSITY SOFTBALL

Manogue blanks Carson

RENO — The Miners scored six in the first and four in the third en route to an easy 11-0 win over the Senators Thursday afternoon.

Carson hosts Galena Saturday at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader.

“They hit the ball well and we made a few errors,” CHS coach Shane Quilling said. “It’s tough to win games when you don’t score.”

Five of Carson’s six hits came from Bailey Allen and Lauren Lemburg. Allen went 3-for-3 and Lemburg 2-for-3.

Lemburg opened the game with a double and moved to third on Allen’s single. They were both stranded as Magdalene Joseph retired three straight hitters. Carson had one other inning when it stranded runners in scoring position.

Bailey McLaughlin led Manogue, going 3-for-3 with two homers and five RBI. Bradianne Glover went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Celestine Senini went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Hailey Merino had a solo homer.

Cougars edge Douglas

MINDEN — Spanish Springs senior Hayley Fein pitched a complete game four-hitter to outduel Douglas sophomore Amanda Hoffman for a 3-2 Northern Division I victory on a windy Thursday afternoon.

Spanish Springs (16-9 overall, 11-2 league) scored once in the first inning then added two more runs in the fourth and held on to defeat Douglas (10-12, 6-7).

Fein had five strikeouts — the last two with the potential tying run on first base in the seventh inning — and walked none. Hoffman allowed nine hits over seven innings during a performance in which she registered four strikeouts and walked none.

Three of the Tigers’ four hits were doubles, two of which came in the fourth inning when they scored twice. Allison Meyer reached base on an infield error with one out in the fourth and came around to score when Corryne Diaz doubled to left field. Diaz was sacrificed to third by Hoffman and then scored on Shaena Robinson’s long double to left-center field.

Katelyn Townsend hit 4-for-4 to lead Spanish Springs offensively.

JV BASEBALL

CHS wins thriller

Carson pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat North Valleys, 13-12, Thursday afternoon.

Landon Truesdale and Delsin Roberts each had two hits and three RBI. Ethan Good, Ian Pettersen, Kyle Glanzmann and Joe Tonino all had two hits.
