The Carson City School District still is taking applications until Tuesday for a District 6 trustee.
Only one person has completed an application for the district, Director of Operations for Nevada Health Centers Marena Works. Works, was the former director of the Carson City Senior Center, along with former deputy and interim Carson City city manager.
Superintendent Richard Stokes said while they’re excited to have Works show an interest, it’s important for people to apply, even if they don’t have a student in school.
“It is great to have people who have an interest in the school because we benefit with people who have life experience that support our programs and philosophies,” Stokes said. “People who have a child in our schools are excellent candidates, but we do also benefit from people who have lifetimes of experience in working with people, business and other school related areas.”
The district has been looking for a new District 6 trustee since March 31 when Deonne Contine resigned from the position.
Anyone interested in the position must reside within District 6 and must submit a letter of interest and resume to Renae Cortez at the District Office by 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
The boundaries for District 6 are: south of Kings Canyon Road, southwest Highway 395 to Colorado Street, southeast along Silver Sage and Sean drives, southwest along Baker Drive to Koontz Lane, southwest along Bigelow to Clearview Drives, southwest along Edmonds Drive, to Snyder Avenue, and to the Douglas County line.
Because the position is for a public office, any information provided in the letter and resume, including the applicant’s name, address and telephone number is available to the public.
Applicants must be a qualified elector at least 18 years of age and upon his or her appointment, before taking office, the applicant must take the oaths prescribed by statute and file the same with the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
The person appointed to fill the vacancy must meet the foregoing qualifications and will serve until the next general election, held in November, which at that time the appointed trustee must be prepared to run for election if he or she desires to continue service. Trustees receive a salary of $400 a month.
The Board of Trustees plans to interview eligible candidates during its scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. May 10. Only applicants who have submitted a letter of interest and resume and appear for an interview will be considered. Following the interview, the board may make a selection, defer a selection or re-advertise for the position.
Meetings will be held in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.
To submit the letter of intent and resume, mail the necessary documents to Renae Cortez, Executive Board Administrative Assistant Carson City School District, 1402 W. King Street, P.O. Box 603, Carson City 89702.
Any questions can be directed to Cortez at 775-283-2100.
