Prep roundup: Carson softball struggles against Galena

Scoring runs continues to be a problem for the Carson High softball team.

The Senators managed just six hits on the day and were swept by Galena, 6-0 and 12-0, Saturday at Carson High School.

Galena took control early, scoring three in the second and two in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. Carson didn’t play well defensively. There were several balls that dropped for hits that should have been caught and a couple of singles were misplayed into extra bases.

Alyssa Martinez’s two-run double keyed the three-run second for the Grizzlies, which was more than enough to grab the win.

Carson’s Bailey Allen got to second twice, but was stranded each time. She reached third after her third at-bat, but was again stranded.

Allen had two hits, while Cat Linkul and Camiell Simpson added one each.

In the second game, Galena scored twice in the second and third against Kassidy Cooley, though only two of the runs were earned. The Grizzlies hit three homers in the fifth off reliever Lauren Lemburg.

Carson managed just two hits, one each by Simpson and Terryn Earle, in the second contest.

Tigers sweep Manogue

MINDEN — A pair of third inning home runs — Kylie Swan’s grand-slam in game one and Mackenzie Brixey’s three-run shot in game two — put Douglas on track to a key doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

Swan hit 3-for-3 with six RBI to lead Douglas to a 12-2 win in the opener. Brixey hit a three-run homer to break a 4-all tie and the Tigers went on to win 13-12.

With the sweep, Douglas (12-12 overall, 8-7 league) moved into a tie with Manogue (11-9, 8-7) in the Northern Division I standings.

Corryne Diaz hit a two-out, two-run single in the second inning to give Douglas a 3-2 lead in the opener. The Tigers went on to score five runs in the second then Swan followed with her grand-slam in the third to break open a game that was stopped in the fifth due to the 10-run rule. Allison Meyer had three hits and one RBI in the game.

Freshman pitcher Kettja Bennett spotted Manogue a 2-0 lead in the first inning, however, she only allowed two hits the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Douglas scored seven runs in the third inning to take an 11-4 lead and then held on after Manogue scored 10 runs in the final four innings. The Miners scored twice in the top of the seventh and had the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base when Bennett induced a game-ending ground ball to Diaz at third base.

Bennett pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn credit for the save. Amanda Hoffman worked 4.2 innings to secure the win.

Dayton wins twice

DAYTON — Dayton won its first two league games of the season by taking two of three games in a tripleheader against Sparks, winning 8-7, losing 16-5 and then winning 8-2.

In the 8-7 win, McKayla Celedon had a hit and a run, Tiana Snow had a hit, Elizabeth Vincent went 2-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI, Alaura Greenwalt went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Caleigh Onstott went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run. Winning pitcher Nayeli Lara, who was pulled up from the junior varsity and Grace Dickenson combined on the mound.

In the 16-5 loss, Briana Hill went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs, Aleea Howe doubled, Tiana Snow went 1-for-3, Greenwalt went 2-for-4 with a run and Dickenson tripled with two runs.

Onstott carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a four-hitter in the 8-2 win. Hill tripled and had an RBI, Vincent doubled with two runs and an RBI, Howe went 2-for-4 with two runs, Snow went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run, Greenwalt doubled with two runs, Onstott doubled with two RBI and Celedon went 1-for-3.

BASEBALL

Douglas sweeps Hug

RENO — Haydn Brown and Spencer Trivitt collected three hits each to help Douglas to a 9-3 win in the opening game of a doubleheader at Hug Saturday.

Douglas exploded to score 10 runs in the fourth inning to break up a scoreless contest and went on to win 11-1 and complete its sweep.

Isaiah Schat pitched 4.2 innings to win the opener, with help from Justin Phillips to finish the game.

Douglas (9-16 overall, 5-11 league) scored twice in the first inning and added three more runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

In game two, Trivitt went 4-for-4, Schat hit three doubles and Hunter Simpson added three hits. Haden Keller added a home run and drove in three runs.

Muckers sweep Carlin

VIRGINIA CITY – After clearing overnight snow from the infield on Miners Park, the Virginia City Muckers defeated the Carlin Railroaders, Saturday in both games of a non-conference doubleheader 5-4 and 11-1.

Game one was evenly matched, with the Muckers coming out on top 5-4 in a seven inning defensive showdown. Starter Isaiah Yoder went the distance, with nine strikeouts and gave up only one walk and four Carlin hits.

Mucker hitting was led by shortstop Tommy Redican who went 3-for-3 with three singles and the game-winning RBI. Catcher Tanner Uken hit 2-4 with a single and a double while Yoder went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and a double.

In game two, Mucker hitting continued to dominate. Fifteen hits scored 11 runs while the Virginia City defense held the Railroaders to just one run.

Left fielder Wyatt Pieretti led the hitting, going 4-for-4 with three singles and a triple. Uken hit 3-for-4 with three singles; center fielder Ireland Franklin went 2-for-3 with two RBI singles; and Redican was 2-for-4 with a triple and a single.

Virginia City climbed to 12-0 overall and is 4-0 in Division IV conference play.

Dayton sweeps Sparks

DAYTON — The Dust Devils won Friday’s suspended game, 11-10, and then swept the regularly scheduled doubleheader, 5-2 and 24-2, on Saturday.

In the suspended game, Justin Schmidt doubled home the tying run and Nick Hein had the game-winning single in the eighth inning. Dylan Baker had a grand slam and Trevor Burrows had a three-run homer and run-scoring single.

In the first complete game on Saturday, Zach Woitas’ two-run double keyed a three-run third inning and gave the Dust Devils a 4-2 lead. In the fifth, Mark Rainey had a run-scoring single. Jacob Nelson led Dayton with two hits.

In the nightcap, Dayton scored 11 second-innng runs to take a 16-2 lead. Jesse Schmidt went 4-for-5, including a grand slam and two-run homer, Jacob Nelson went 4-for-4 with an RBI, and Baker, Woitas and Rainey all had three hits. Rainey drove in three runs.

SWIMMING

Carson splits double dual

Carson swept Wooster and was swept by Douglas Friday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Douglas boys beat Carson 203-94 and the DHS girls won 221.50 to 106,50. Carson’s boys beat Wooster 145-62, and the girls triumphed 200-96.

Dagen Kipling was the only overall boys winner, taking the 200 IM in 2:04.67 and the 100 free in 50.24. Brett Kolb had a good day, finishing second in the 500 free (5:23.67) and the 200 free (1:56.07). Dylan Popoff was third in the 50 free (26.39) and Reece Canfield was third in the 100 fly (57.19) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.92).

Cristina Saenz was second in the 100 free (1:01.06) and third in the 100 fly (1:09.09). Christy Krahn was third in the 50 free (28.25) and Nicole Van Geel was third in the 100 back (1:07.58).

JV BASEBALL

Carson sweeps Wooster

RENO — The Senators rolled to a sweep, 14-1 and 16-6.

Kyle Glanzmann, Joe Tonino and Dan Morrison all had two hits in the opener. In the second game, a two-run single by Tim Jones keyed a five-run rally in the first. Jones scored twice and drove in two runs. Carson put the game out of reach with an eight-run third.
