Steven Saylor will be featured in a free lecture on May 5.
The Historical Society of Dayton Valley annual celebration of Nevada State Historical Preservation and Archeology Awareness Month begins at 7 p.m. May 5 at the Dayton Valley Community Center, 170 Pike Street in Old Town Dayton.
Steven Saylor will kick off the event when he reminisces about two town characters, “Little Louie” of Mexican heritage, and Raymond Darrough, a Shoshone medicine man.
Saylor is a long-time Dayton resident, historical preservationist and an internationally known artist who lives in one of Dayton’s oldest homes on Cemetery Road. Saylor’s Evergreen Studio, located at the same site, is inside a 1880s Carson & Colorado Railroad Box car that is adjacent to his show room. Refreshments will be served.
Additional free lectures are at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12 at the Dayton Valley Community Center. Dayton residents recall stories about saving the Bluestone Building.
On May 19, Karen Howe will present “Whispers from the Past: A Look at the Dayton Cemetery and the importance of Preserving Our Past.”
