Fallon track dominates home meet

The Greenwave track and field team squeezed in a small tune-up meet on Wednesday before competing against familiar and bigger competition this weekend.

The Fallon boys won the four-team Conclave of Awesomeness at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex while the Lady Wave took second. Fallon travels to Minden on Saturday for the Big George invitational.

“It’s a chance for some of the kids to get marks in their events,” Fallon boys coach Steve Heck said about the small meet. “Some of the kids tried out some events. We take it serious to a point but it’s kind of a fun day, too. It was just kind of a relaxing afternoon.”

The regional meet is only three weeks away, but Heck is starting to see Fallon turn the corner and get into prime shape at just the right time.

“There’s always things you want to improve on,” he said. “We’ve worked really hard. You’re just kind of now starting to see the results. They’re getting faster. We’ve really improved with the times lately. We’re right where we need to be. We expect some big jumps in times.”

Although Fallon garnered only two first-place finishes, it dominated the top 10 in most events as Tristen Thomson won the 400-meter run in 52.47 seconds and Colton Peterson claimed the 200 in 23.46.

“We had a lot of kids PR. My sprinters did really well,” Heck said. “Three of the kids ran under 12 seconds in the 100. Our sprinter times were really good. We had some good things happen in the sprints.”

Broder Thurston (11.81), Peterson (11.82) and Drake Copley (11.87) finished third through fifth in the 100 and Reid Clyburn (11.98) was fifth, while Copley (24.16) took third in the 200 followed by Clyburn (24.42), fifth; Clayton Steelmon (24.80), sixth; Thomson (24.96), seventh; and Oscar Garcia (25.52), eighth.

Thurston ran the 400 in 54.41 to finish fourth followed by Clyburn (56.36), Peterson (56.47) and Isaiah Williams (56.83) finishing eighth through 10th. Joseph Terry (2:10.31), Williams (2:16.89) and Michael Anderson (2:27.50) finished second through fourth in the 800, while John Kirkland (2:26.49), Shane Ussery (2:39.25) and Dawson Frost (2:45.11) rounded out seventh through ninth.

Justin Cathey took fifth in the 1600 in 5:18.89, followed by Anderson in sixth at 5:22.62. East, Davis Koenig and Trevor Brown finished second through fifth in the 110 hurdles as East ran the race in 19.31, followed by Koenig at 19.33 and Brown at 19.57. Koenig took fifth in the 300 hurdles at 46.36, followed by Jordan Boothe (47.49), sixth; East (48.32), eighth; Kirkland (49.12), ninth; and Brown (49.80), 10th. Fallon’s 4x200 and 4x800 relay teams finished second and the 4x100 team was fourth.

TJ Mauga scored second-place finishes in the shot put and discus after throws of 46 feet, 7 inches and 141-11, respectively. Sean Cordes took fifth in the shot put at 40-6.50 and eighth in the discus at 104-3. Oscar Garcia placed second in the long jump at 17-7 and third in the high jump at 5-4. East took fifth in both the long (16-7) and triple (35-10) jumps, while Nathaniel Klein was fourth in the pole vault at 10 feet and Terry was ninth at 8 feet.

Cathey (5-2) and Kapili Gleason (5) finished sixth and eighth in the high jump; Ryan Bitter (16-6.25), Koenig (16-2) and Shane Ussery (15-10.5) finished sixth through eighth in the long jump; and Koenig (35-7.5) and Bitter (35-2) were sixth and seventh in the triple jump.

Lady Wave finishes second

The Lady Wave is near top form after injuries plagued the jumping corps for the past four weeks.

“We’re finally getting them all back,” Fallon girls coach Paul Orong said. “We’re having girls trying to run other things.”

Fallon won all but two of the field events. Whitney Skabelund completed the hat trick by winning the long and triple jumps and pole vault while Leann Stands won the discus.

Skabelund leaped 33-2.25 to win the triple, 16-6.5 in the long and 8-6 in the pole vault while Stands threw for 109-7 to win the discus. She also threw for 32-1 to take second in the shot put.

“She hasn’t jumped in over a month,” Orong said of Skabelund. “She did incredibly well. We had to shorten her approach because she still can run down the runway.”

The Lady Wave nearly swept the jumping events as well as it placed nine in the top 10 of the long, six in the triple and five in the high jumps.

Cassidy East (14-3), Caitlin Knox (14-2), Sierra Hickox (13-9.5) finished second through fourth in the long jump, while Mayla Dahl (13-6), Emily Evett (13-2), CC Ramos (13-1), Allie Lister (13) and Elizabeth Ebner (12-10.75) rounded out spots six through 10. Hickox (32-4), Evett (29-8.5), East (28-5), Dahl (27-10.5) and Lister (26-6.5) finished second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the triple jump. Brynlee Shults took second in the high jump at 4-8, followed by Jordan Beyer in third at 4-8, Dahl in fifth at 4-6, East in sixth at 4-4 and Hickox in ninth at 4-2.

Lillie Whole finished seventh in the shot put at 27-1.5 and Gracy Lisanti was 10th in both the shot put (25-1) and discus (64-1). All the throwers scored personal bests.

Beyer won the 200 in 28.09 and took second in the 100 in 13.51. Shelby Hickox (29.41), Dahl (30.04) and Melyssa Williams (30.81) finished sixth, seventh and 10th in the 200, while Evett was third in the 100 at 13.73 followed by Dahl in 10th at 14.81. Shults placed second in the 400 at 1:06.40, and Hickox was fourth in the 800 in 2:44.95 and Ramos was sixth in 3:08.80.

Chloe Overlie took third in both the 1600 and 3200 with runs of 5:52.06 and 13:34.80, while Amanda Pursley was sixth in the 3200 at 15:23.87. Five placed in the top 10 of the 100 hurdles with Hickox capturing a third-place finish in 19.61. Ramos took fourth in 20.09 followed by Ebner in sixth at 20.49, Lister in seventh at 21.11 and Easton in ninth at 22.58. Ramos was sixth in the 300 hurdles at 57.73, followed by Ebner in seventh at 57.74 and Lister in eighth at 57.98. Fallon’s 4x200 relay team of Evett, Shults, Beyer and Sierra Hickox took first.
