NNDA recognizes Fallon dentist

Local dentist Dr. Cary Jaques received a major award for his work with the region’s Health and Wellness Hub initiative, expanding care for young children, the elderly, veterans and families in need.

The Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA) recognized Jaques with a Pioneer Award, specifically the Pony Express Award, which is for best community involvement.

“Growing up, I didn’t have any other professionals in my family,” Jaques said. “We were those kids … being raised by a single parent, not a lot of money … I think it’s just one way, when I’m in a better situation now, I can give back to those demographics, where that was me.”

NNDA Board President Mike Jackson said the work Fallon Family Dental Care does “represent the best in community support.”

“The free dental services they provided at ‘dental days’ in Silver Springs and other remote area medical events touched people from Churchill and Mineral to Lyon and Douglas counties,” Jackson said. “We congratulate Dr. Jaques and his team, and are proud to represent, recognize and support businesses like his in our efforts to bring further business development to the region.

“When we’re able to, we do it,” said Jaques of when opportunities arise to make a difference. Jaques, who also speaks Spanish, talked about another thing he tries to do is help Smiles of Central America. He and his wife go to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras to provide dental care—all at their own expense, “from the mirrors to filling material for the teeth,” he said.

“It’s great,” said Jaques. “Many may never see a dentist in their life otherwise.” He added he would like to have their kids come along when they’re a little older.

The doctor was honored among other Pioneer Award recipients at an annual ceremony the NNDA holds to celebrate successes and accomplishments of Sierra region organizations.

Winners this year included those exhibiting exceptional green practices, nonprofit work, innovation, marketing, agriculture, education and healthcare, as well as outstanding employees. The NNDA also celebrated companies that either relocated to the area or significantly expanded last year.

“Giving back to the community is important and binds us all in a most important common cause,” Jackson said.

The sold-out ceremony was held earlier this month in the Carson City Nugget Ballroom.
