This year’s Fallon Youth Club Kid’s Cup took over the Fallon Golf Course on Saturday with 13 teams competing in a four-person scramble to raise money for the club.
Shannon Goodrick, executive director of the Fallon Youth Club, said she thinks the event was hugely successful, netting more than $6,000 for the club’s services in its second most successful fundraiser in four years.
“One, the weather couldn’t have cooperated any better, and two, everybody was having fun,” Goodrick said, “and I think the key to any events success is just that everybody is having fun.”
The tournament was one of the four “Fallon Majors” this year, recurring annual tournaments such as the Rotary Club tournament and Golf for the Arts tournament in June.
The youth golf tournament is not the oldest among the majors, but the event attracted as many course regulars as it did club supporters this year.
The first place team “Weapons of Grass Destruction” was made up of Mike Richards and Joe Cushing, who retained the cup from last year’s victory, along with Mike Richards II and Alan Kalt. Second was the team of Jim Isbister, Jason Kirby, Troy Tweed and Ed Smirnes, the foursome which took first in the Rotary Club Golf Tournament in June, one of the four majors. The team from Naval Air Station Fallon took third with a score of 59.
The first and second place teams initially tied for first at 54 before a chip-off decided the winner from the 100-yard marker with Cushing landing closest to the pin.
All expenses were paid by private donations. Tomas Kutansky and Jason Ferguson of Nevada Dental Arts donated $1,000 to the cash prices. The Slanted Porch owner Steve Hernandez also donated $1,000 to green fees while Neil and Kelli Kelly donated $1,500 for the rest of the green fees and food for the event.
Dans Commercial Door, an out of state donor, donated $600 which made up the difference for the second cash draw of the $400 and $800 cash draw prizes.
Because the tournament was privately funded, 100 percent of all proceeds went back into the Fallon Youth Club for its services.
