Aly Lawson has joined the Lahontan Valley News as the new education reporter in addition to covering other government boards. She has already written several feature stories on people for the LVN.

Lawson has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, with a minor in English, from Walla Walla University in eastern Washington. She also has an MBA, with an emphasis on marketing, from La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif. She has over 10 years of mass communication experience, from newspaper and magazine work to digital media management.

Lawson is from Vancouver, Wash. Her husband, Cary, is a search and rescue helicopter pilot at Naval Air Station Fallon. They have a one-year-old daughter, Jules, and a three-legged yellow lab, Butters. Their family recently moved to Nevada from Japan, where they were stationed for three years.

Although her family has moved around for the last several years, she enjoys the adventure and flow of opportunities and people as well as exploring new places. She’s looking forward to making Fallon her home and taking advantage of its nearby snow skiing, hiking and attractions like Fly Geyser or trying to view Area 51.

Her interests in writing range from breaking news and unique feature stories to learning how businesses are successful. She says covering Fallon events has been a dream come true since New York is overrated and she’s usually never in one place long enough to become a staff reporter. Not to mention, small town life charms her to the core.

She’s also an avid reader so feel free to give her your latest book recommendation
