100 Years Ago

Lincoln Highway…tourists passing through Fallon: Two families of the Zillit’s passed through in a Studebaker and a Reo from Los Angeles and return. They report the roads not very good… Mr. and Mrs. Rettig and daughter of Denver drove in a Ford on their way to Los Angeles, being four days on the way from Salt Lake. They report the roads fairly good…H.C. Bradbury and family of Kansas City, Mo., left that place June 10 on a tour to Los Angeles in an Overland six. They had no trouble and report the worst roads on the trip around Grimes.

A party composed of Doc Beggat, Jos. Berr and Bud White passed through Thursday on the way from the coast to Chicago in a Winton six. The object of their trip is advertising and they had a most novel method. On the rear seat with one of the men sat an unusually large cinnamon bear, a board being arranged back of the front seat for his feet to rest upon. Bruin was a “live one,” and attracts considerable attention along the Lincoln Highway. The party goes under the name of the “Advertising Bear.”

75 Years Ago

Maureen O’Hara, noted Hollywood screen star, will be a guest of the Nevada state fair in Fallon Sunday, August 31. “Not only will Miss O’Hara take part in the parade, but she will be present at the 20-30 club dance Saturday evening,” said organizer Evans “and she may attend the rodeo during the afternoon Sunday.” The Hollywood celebrity is spending the summer at Lake Tahoe.

50 Years Ago

The supervisors of the Sheckler Soil Conservation District were recently complimented by Orville L. Freeman, Secretary of Agriculture and Donald A. Williams, for the development of a new long-range program and the execution of a modernized Basic Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “This is an important initial step in helping private landowners move forward effectively with their resource and development effort,” Freeman said. He added that we are on the threshold of a new era in the management of our resources – of land, forest and wildlife – by our people. “I am convinced” Freeman said “that your District has an important part to play in giving reality to our broadened concepts of conservation.” Fallon Eagle-Standard, Tuesday, August 9, 1966

Fallon’s So-Par-O-Van golf course was the scene of teeing off this morning as the sixth annual tournament of the Nevada State Women’s Golf Association officially got underway. This year’s tournament is being held in Fallon for the first time since the association, claiming 265 members, was created here in Fallon. The Fallon Women’s Golf and Duck Club will host the affair here at “Brother George’s Duck Cabin.”
