Festival events coming together for Labor Day

Deadlines are here and tickets are selling for the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair from Sept. 2-5 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

The festival’s Lions Club Junior Rodeo applications are due today. Ages 18 and younger may apply, and it’s $20 per event. A birth certificate copy and fees must accompany the application, and all entries must be notarized and postmarked by today

The Lions Club Labor Day Parade is also still accepting entries.

There are still tickets available for the festival’s opening concert by Love and Theft, a country duo that swept the music world with their top 10 hit, “Runaway.” They’ll play on Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. after opening bands Rachel Steele and Road 88 as well as Stephen Christie and Kyle Rothchild. The fairground gates will open at 5 p.m.

VIP packages ($45) may be purchased online at www.FallonCantaloupeFestival.Tix.com, or for general admission ($25) at CC Communications and Fallon Ford-Toyota.

Robyn Jordan, marketing director for the festival, said the VIP package includes a festival weekend pass, two drink tokens and VIP tent admittance.

Dog show entries are welcome Saturday at the festival. The Dog Day contest categories are cutest, smallest, largest and best costume. To sign up, go to the main stage before the show starts at 10 a.m.

The Cutest Little Cowboy & Cowgirl Contest will be Sunday at the festival. Age groups are 0-1, 2-3, 4-5 and 6-7. Parents can bring their children in western attire and ready to strut. Participants sign up at the main stage at 3 p.m. before the contest. The special guest emcee is cowgirl trick performer Karen Quest.

The Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast on Labor Day will start at 6 a.m. on Maine Street between Picture This! and E.H. Hursh. Adults are $6.50 and children are $3.50.

There will also be a Food Hub farmers market on Labor Day from 8 a.m. to noon.

Festival premier books, which detail exhibit hall competition entry, can be picked up at the Churchill County Agriculture Extension Office, Churchill County Library, Flower Tree Nursery, J&K Llamas and Workman Farms.

The festival will run Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to midnight and Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 and children 12 and under are free, along with parking. Learn more on the festival website and at www.Facebook.com/CantaloupeFest.
