The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To longtime Carson City judge Michael Griffin, who died last week at the age of 72. Griffin served as Carson District Judge for 28 years presiding over numerous prominent cases. His integrity was unquestioned.
SILVER DOLLAR: To 220 Carson City Citizenship study students in the ESL In-Home Program who have become U.S. citizens. There are also another 51 students who are studying to complete the program.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Amie Oden from the Carson City Junior Giants program, who was one of 85 team parents, coaches or officials across the West to be honored by the San Francisco Giants Junior Giants program.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Matt Teixeira, Clint Treadway and Scott Witter for their induction into the Carson High Football Hall of Fame and to longtime CHS football supporter Mike Plattsmier for his selection as the Milan Tresnit Award winner.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Bob Bateman, who just retired as Carson High’s athletic director. Bateman’s influence on students in the area as a coach and educator spanned four decades. Bateman had successful runs as a track coach at CHS in the 1980s, winning two state titles and as the Senators’ football coach in the 1990s, winning a league title in 1998. As athletic director, Bateman turned the state capital into the state capital for high school sports as CHS hosted numerous state and regional events under his direction. He as also named as the state’s Athletic Director of the Year during his time at CHS.
