Educate Nevada Now calls on treasurer to obey court, stop the vouchers program

The parents who formed Educate Nevada Now and won a court order blocking the school vouchers program Monday called on State Treasurer Dan Schwartz to stop promoting the Educational Savings Accounts school vouchers program.

Their lawyers notified Attorney General Adam Laxalt continuing to promote the program the Nevada Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional violates the high court order.

In September, the high court ruled the vouchers law passed in the final hours of the 2015 Legislature was unconstitutional because it pulled money out of public school funding to pay for the vouchers.

The program would have allowed parents to claim about $5,100 a year in state K-12 funding for each of their children and let them use it for tuition in private and religious based schools.

“Our legal team has notified the attorney general that Mr. Schwartz must obey the permanent injunction by the court, stopping all activities to implement the now defunct ESA program,” said David Sciarra, the lawyer representing the parents. ”If he does not comply with the court injunction, we’re prepared to seek relief from the court including asking for contempt sanctions.”
