The game was there for the taking, but the Carson High girls were unable to finish.
Spanish Springs outscored the Senators 9-2 in the last 3-minutes 45-seconds en route to a 52-44 win in a Northern Nevada 4A crossover game Tuesday night at Morse Burley Gymnasium.
Carson dropped to 0-2 in league and 2-3 overall. Carson hosts Pyramid Lake Friday at 5 p.m.
“We lost our legs,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We weren’t getting back on defense. We played competitive. It was a winnable game.
“Basketball is four quarters and we’re only playing three right now. I’m happy with our effort, and we’re getting better every game.”
Carson trailed 37-28 after three quarters, but thanks to seven points by Lauren Lemburg, the Senators battled into a 39-all tie with 5:34 left in regulation.
Baskets by Alysa Dominguez and Serena Sanchez made it 43-39, but three straight points by Haley Garver made it 43-42 with 4:08 left. That was the closest Carson would get.
Anhelica Shanrock had a three-point play and a putback to spark the aforementioned 9-2 run to take a 51-43 lead with 29 seconds remaining.
Lemburg finished with 13, Garver added eight and Bella Kordonowy collected seven. Dominguez led Spanish Springs with 12 points.
Falcons win first title
Grace Bonafede scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 47-45 win over Vacaville Christian in the championship game of the Foresthill Invitational Saturday.
The Falcons reached the finals with a 35-27 win over Foresthill.
Tourney MVP Clare Davison (13 points) sparked a 22-13 fourth-quarter comeback in the championship game, including a 30-footer.
Brynna Hansen added nine points and 10 rebounds.
JV Girls
Dayton edged
Despite 12 points by Julian Rogacs, the Dust Devils dropped a 31-21 decision to Lovelock.
Tamia Powell added five points and Hannah Coltrin pulled in six rebounds.
Sierra Lutheran wins
Sierra Lutheran had three players score in double figures as Amanda Almeida scored 14 points, Taylor Davison had 13 points and Ruth Boogman added 10 points in a 43-22 win over Sage Ridge on Tuesday.
