The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested one man following a three-hour standoff in Fernley Wednesday morning.

Deputies responded to reports of a domestic battery near the 400 block of Willow Way around 8 a.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, they found a woman with an injury to her foot requiring immediate medial attention.

The suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Jonathan Garcia of Fernley locked himself in a bedroom in the residence and was challenging deputies to come in and get him.

A command center was established to handle the influx of additional law enforcement, fire and rescue assets and other support agencies, Lyon County officials said. The Sheriff’s Office deployed its Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Teams because of verbal threats against law enforcement.

The surrounding apartment buildings were evacuated and Fernley Elementary and Fernley Intermediate schools were put into lock-down as a safety precaution because of their close proximity to the operation.

Garcia eventually voluntarily surrendered to deputies.

Lyon Sheriff Al McNeil acknowledged all the agencies and entities who came together for the crisis including Mayor Roy Edgington, the Street Department, Lyon County Human Services, the LCSO Volunteers in Policing, the North Lyon County Fire Protection District, the Southwest Gas response team and Nevada Highway Patrol.

“Only with everyone’s help and effort were we able to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution,” said McNeil.
