100 Years Ago

Some marked improvements are in progress for the County Telephone System. A new switchboard has been ordered, and when installed there will be a double switchboard, with two girls instead of one on duty. Another improvement of the system is the installing of 2500 feet of cable on Williams avenue and for two blocks south of the telephone building. “This is a war, according to Mr. Hitler himself, for the conquest of the entire world and slavery of the people of all nations other than Germany.” Attorney Lester Summerfield of Reno yesterday declared in a talk before the Fallon Rotary club during a “ladies day” program prepared by H.E. Roe.” His purpose as announced is to destroy the democracies of the world including the United States.” Summerfield continued “It makes us wonder if we today are going through the same course, or whether we finally have reached the intelligence where we can profit from the mistakes of the past.” The speaker told of ancient Greece as having reached the highest stage of civilization in history.

Boy Scouts of the Nevada Area Council who governed the State for the day met the officials they were scheduled to replace. Nevada is the only state in the union which observes such a program for boys, scout officials report. The Fallon Eagle, Saturday, February 15, 1941

Las Vegas said the state engineer is approaching a declining water supply from artesian wells in which the hydrostatic pressure is becoming lower. The only solution is either pumping from Mead Lake or introducing new industries to the low-cost power of the dam where an abundance of water is available. Regarding creating artesian districts, few know of Pahrangat valley, several thousand acres from which eight crops of hay a year are cut. The Fallon Eagle, Saturday, February 15, 1941
