Six inches of snow in Carson City

Carson City crews stayed busy Thursday after the city accumulated nearly six inches during a winter storm that hit the area.

The National Weather Service in Reno reported the city got 4- to 6 inches of snow around the Capitol. The heavy accumulation of snow caused a number of issues for Carson authorities and residents as tree limbs and power lines were reportedly down throughout the day.

Pedestrians and motorists were asked to avoid the west side of Carson City, south of William Street and north of 10th Street as crews worked to clear downed limbs and power lines.

The downed lines left nearly 1,000 people without power in Carson City as of 9 a.m. and 380 people without power as of 10. Nearly 212 were without power in Douglas County, according to NV Energy.

Thursday morning the Nevada Highway Patrol reported 11 incidents they reported to in Carson City.

A truck was blocking traffic for a short time around 8 a.m. at the Fifth Street roundabout after it ran off the road.

Up at the lake, a foot or more of snow was on the ground level by 6 a.m. and a winter storm warning was in effect until noon.

At higher elevations, such as Northstar California, a reported 21 inches of snow fell by 7 a.m., with 19 inches recorded overnight.

South Shore ski resorts saw an abundance of snow since the storm began Wednesday night. The Incline Village Diamond Peak Ski Resort reported 16 inches of fresh snow overnight, while Heavenly Mountain Resort on the South Shore reported 24 inches since the start of the snow Wednesday. Kirkwood Mountain Resort, also on the South Shore reported 18 inches and Sierra-at-Tahoe reported 21 inches.

Squaw Valley, north of Lake Tahoe reported 16 inches of snow overnight and 20 inches in the last 24 hours. The Donner Summit Sugar Bowl reported 13 inches of snow overnight.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Reno said another weak storm system should be coming through the area today, though most of the storm will stay north of I-80. There will be some showers expected, however not to the extent residents saw Thursday and temperatures are expected to rise to the upper 40s and 50s.
