The Carson City Sheriff’s Office handed out more than two dozen citations during a DUI and compliance checkpoint Saturday.
The checkpoint lasted nearly five hours Saturday on William Street near Mills Park. Deputies stopped vehicles randomly to check for impaired drivers, check for driver’s licenses and inform drivers on the dangers of distracted driving. The purpose of the event was to educate and create safe roadways, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
This is the first time the Sheriff’s Office has had a DUI checkpoints in several years, however the department is looking to start holding them again at least once every quarter.
Though no intoxicated drivers were found, 26 citations were given out to drivers for offenses such as no registration or insurance, not having a driver’s license in possession or having a revoked driver’s license. Five vehicles were towed for not having a driver’s license.
“DUI is one of the leading causes of fatalities on our roadways and a DUI checkpoint shows a pro-active approach to taking DUI seriously in our community,” said Reserve Deputy Steven Cornfield.
