Prep roundup: Carson girls fall against McQueen

McQueen outscored Carson 14-4 in the fourth quarter, and that was the key to the Lancers’ 45-36 Northern Division I crossover game Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.

The loss dropped Carson to 2-4. The Senators host Damonte Ranch Tuesday at 5:15 in their first Sierra League game of the season.

Thanks to 10 points by Ivy Pembrook, Carson led 32-31 after three periods. A putback and 3-pointer by Melissa Glanzmann put Carson ahead entering the final eight minutes of action.

The Lancers quickly took control with an 8-2 run in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the final period, and CHS never recovered. McQueen knocked in six free throws in the final 26 seconds to extend its 39-36 lead. CHS turned the ball over five times and missed its only field-goal attempt in that span.

“I thought we played a good game, but we just ran out of energy,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We played better in the third quarter tonight than we have been, but we still have to cut down our turnovers. The kids worked hard and never gave up.

“McQueen played a good game and hit some key shots.”

Bri Alvarado added six points for CHS, while Andrea Maffei added five points.

Dayton wallops Sparks

SPARKS — Dayton bolted to a 27-4 halftime lead en route to a 51-21 victory in a Northern Division IA contest Friday night.

Angela Sikora had a monster game, scoring 36 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and seven steals plus four blocks. She was complemented by Elora Neep, who had five points and nine rebounds.

“We haven’t had a game in 2 1/2 weeks, but we came out strong,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “I was pleased to see how well the team played together, ran the court and how aggressive they were. We are happy to win, but looking forward to Lowry next week.”

Falcons edge Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE — Grace Bonafede scored eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Falcons to an exciting 41-40 Division IV win over the Serpents Friday night.

Sierra Lutheran is 8-4 overall and 2-1 in league.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

Sparks edges Dayton

SPARKS — Despite 26 points and 17 rebounds by J.J. Ply, the Dust Devils dropped a 55-54 thriller to Sparks on Friday night.

Sparks made four free throws in the final 30 seconds making Josh Riders’ 3-pointer at the end meaningless.

“It’s the first time we’ve competed for a win in the last month,” said Dayton assistant Kevin Ply. “The kids played hard.”

Riders ended up with 15 points and five rebounds.

Muckers pound Smith Valley

SMITH — Colt Hess scored 24 points to lead Virginia City to a 55-25 win over Smith Valley in the Division IV opener for both teams Friday night.

Virginia City held Smith Valley to four points in the second half.

Tanner Uken added 16 points for VC.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sierra Lutheran rolls

HAWTHORNE — Aleyna Gilson scored 11 points, Amanda Almeida had seven points and Alyssa Rowe added six points as Sierra Lutheran rolled to a 31-8 win over Hawthorne.

Dayton dropped by Sparks

SPARKS — April Goodale scored seven points, but it wasn’t enough as Sparks topped the Dust Devils, 40-29.

Lancers edge CHS

McQueen sent Carson back to the .500 mark for the league season with a 45-41 victory Friday at Carson.

Lauren Lemburg led Carson with 17 points and Ku’Ulei Haupu added 12.

Carson is 8-6 overall and 3-3 in league.

RENO — McQueen edged Carson, 50-47, in a double-overtime thriller.

Deepak Badhan led Carson with nine and Christian Ortega added seven.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson boys win

RENO — Derek Barry scored 16 to lead the Senators to a 49-40 victory.

Lakoda Smokey added eight and Kyle Glanzmann chipped in seven for CHS, which improved to 6-8.
