School safety, STEM education and a report on the $10 million Carson City Race to the Top grant’s statistical insights are anticipated at the Carson City Community Center in a joint meeting Thursday.

The 6 p.m. joint session of the city’s School District Board of Trustees and the Board of Supervisors will follow an earlier day long meeting of the city governing board alone.

Among items on the evening agenda are presentations on the Cops in Schools Program, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Summit last month, and statistics stemming from the $10 million federal grant to the district.

Matters to be taken up earlier by the city’s governing board include possible renewal and amendment of City Manager Nick Marano’s contract with the Board of Supervisors.

In addition, the board is set to hear about street maintenance and financing, a presentation and public comment on the work of Charles Abbott Associates on building permit services, and deal with budget augmentations.

During the day’s meeting, the board also will meet as the city Redevelopment Authority, as the Liquor Control Board with Sheriff Ken Furlong, and as the city Board of Health with Furlong and city Health Officer Dr. Susan Pintar.

Reports during the health board session will come from Pintar, as well as Health and Human Services Director Nicki Aaker, and a couple of other presentations will cover work of the city’s Sexual Assault Response Team and HHS accreditation.

The board’s meeting begins in the Sierra Rome at 8:30 a.m., resuming at 2 p.m. after a lunch break and then picks up later with the joint city and school boards’ evening session in the same location.
