Beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 25, ham radio operators will attempt to make as many contacts around the world as they can in a 24-hour period.

Sierra Intermountain Emergency Radio Association (SIERA) will set up its stations in the RV parking lot of the Minden Airport. Not only will it vie for highest points in radio contacts; it will greet visitors and show them how SIERA contributes to Carson Valley communities. On hand will be SIERA’s new trailer that holds three positions for radio operators.

On Field Day, amateur radio operators are encouraged to not use their home stations, but to set up and operate from a remote site.

Those interested in trying out amateur radio, a GOTA station (Get on the Air) operator can help visitors overcome their fear of microphones.

The weekend before Field Day, SIERA will be following riders in the Pony Express Re-Ride as it makes its way across Nevada.

SIERA meets at 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month at Carson Valley United Methodist Church on Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.
