CARSON CITY — The Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program has received the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program grant.

The grant will begin in July and run through October.

The WIC FMNP grant provides additional fresh, unprepared, fruits and vegetables to select WIC participants, and promotes the awareness, use of and sales at farmers’ markets. In six Nevada counties, women and children who have been certified to receive WIC benefits or who are on a waiting list for WIC certification, are also eligible to participate in the WIC FMNP. A variety of fresh, nutritious, unprepared fruits, vegetables and herbs may be purchased at participating farmers’ markets with WIC FMNP coupons.

The selected counties for the WIC FMNP in 2016 are Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Mineral and Washoe. These counties have agriculture presence within the community, at least one farmers’ market within close proximity to the WIC clinics. WIC FMNP benefits will be issued to eligible WIC participants at their local WIC clinics within these counties, to be redeemed at participating markets.

“The WIC Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program benefits expand access to a variety of fresh and nutritious foods for WIC participants while also building community support for local farmers’ markets,” said Beth Handler, Chief for the Bureau of Child, Family, and Community Wellness.
