Community sports: Carson High cross country runners start conditioning

Conditioning for the upcoming cross country season is under way.

Coach Pete Sinnott said the group is meeting every Monday at the Spooner Maintenance Station, Wednesdays at Carson Middle School and Fridays at the south end of the Pete Livermore Sports Complex. Any runner interested in competing for the CHS cross country team is strongly urged to attend.

Interested runners should contact Sinnott at 883-1420 for more information. New runners and juniors require a physical. The forms for physicals and to sign up are on the Carson High School website.

Weise foursome wins at Thunder Canyon

The team of Cathy Weise, Lynn Greer, Stephanie Walton and Virginia Bonar shot a 165 gross to win the Ladies Day event at Thunder Canyon Country Club on June 23.

Barbara Plymell, Jeanne Brennan, Mary Anderson and Shirley Westfall shot 172 to finish second.

Low net honors went to Carol Boice, Sandi Oglesby, Shelly Brewster-Meredith and Susan Hood with a 120. Barbee Waqldre, Caludia Goodnight. Linda Escher and Gayle Block were second at 122.

• Becky Martinelli and Linda Escher shot a net 112 to win Thunder Canyon’s Rendevouz event. They beat Susan Hood and Cindy Hannah by six shots and Kathy Cockerill and Lynn Greenman by 13. Karen Hoppe won closest to the hole on three of the par-3s and Shelly Brewster-Meredith won the other. Hoppe and Brewster-Meredith were the low gross winners at 147.

• Michael McGee, Saul Singer, Jack Bonar and Mike Judge shot a net 119 to win the Men’s Day tournament on June 24 at Thunder Canyon. The format was two best balls of four.

David Mello, Emmanuel Ramiro, Max Gundlach and Ken Smitreski were second at 123, and Steve McKnight, Larry Goodnight, Riley Beckett and Raymond Badger were third at 125.

Randy Plymell and Jerry Hughes were closest to the hole winners on No. 2.

Welton wins at Empire Ranch

Tom Welton topped Bill Milligan in a tie-breaker to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event on June 22. Both players shot net 67s. The format was stroke play with four clubs and a putter.

Tom Teders won Flight B with a 67, one shot clear of John Masiello and two clear of Skip Yokota. John Pearson won Flight C with a 67, one stroke better than Rich Bremenour and four better than Lee Ghiglieri. John Sullivan won Flight D with a 61, two shots ahead of Kurt Cleek and four better than Don Wilson. Marshall McCurdy won Flight E with a 70, a shot ahead of Bob Pluth. Art Skipworth was third at 72.

Martin Johnson, John Pearson and Bruce Serpa were closest to the hole winners.

Menezes and Hala win at CVGC

Marc Menezes and Roger Hala shot a net 61 to win the 2-man best ball event at Carson Valley Golf Club on June 26. Dan Essary and Jack Sparman were second with a 64.

Augie Martinez and Mike Davis won Flight B with a 59, two shots ahead of Chuck Householder and Joe Morrison. John Pearson and Don Carey won Flight C with a 56, four shots clear of John Watson and Bob Van Nort. Essary and Menezes won closest to the hole.

Ottos place in mountain bike event

Twins, Molly and Mallory Otto, 17, seniors at Carson High School, won second and third places in the Northstar Downhill Mountain Bike Series at Northstar in Lake Tahoe.

The twins descended from an altitude of 8,014 feet on a single-track steep downhill. They faced rough terrain, jumps, drops, boulders, downed trees, and a variety of obstacles. Racers travel at the highest speed possible, competing by time among other riders. Riders start at intervals, typically taking two to five minutes to compete down a double-diamond track.

Molly and Mallory will continue to compete in the summer series at Northstar.
