150 years ago

Businesslike: There was a good deal of dust stirred up on our streets yesterday by the many teams that were laden here for Salt Lake and other points east and started upon their journeys. Certainly not less than a dozen big wagons were piled full of one kind and another of freight, and our too quiet little city really looked brisk during the better part of the day. Guess that day is breaking.

130 years ago

An unjust act: The Elko Independent protests against the injustice of the act of the Legislature of 1885, which provides that no school district shall be entitled to a portion of the school funds unless there be at least 10 census children in the district. It cites Deeth district, which was organized in 1884, as an instance of the injustice. Until recently there were 12 or 15 children at Deeth, which gave $200 to its credit, but now there are only nine, and not one more.

100 years ago

A number of scholars from the Dayton school are here meeting with Gov. Boyle, President Hendricks and Prof. J.E. Bray, members of the State Board of Education to hear complaints of friction between scholars and the school board. Politics and other matters are said to be mixed up in it.

70 years ago

With Eastern Star members from Carson City, Virginia City, Gardnerville and Schurz attending, an informal “friendship” meeting was held last night under the direction of Esther chapter No. 3, O.E.S. Merle Enhance, worthy matron, and Joel Snyder, worthy patron, presided.

Several of the top racing personalities at Tahoe-Carson speedway will return to action on the banked oval tomorrow evening for the first time this season on a program that will feature the 1966 Women’s Powder Puff Derby Championship.

A new report shows six major Nevada hospitals had $56.8 million in pretax profits last year. The state Human Resources Department says in some cases the profits seem excessive, fueling an effort to control hospital rates.
