The annual RSVP Independence Day Celebration and Carnival is coming to Mills Parks to ring in the holiday weekend.
The celebration runs Friday through Monday in Mills Park. This is the 24th year the program has held the carnival fundraiser, and this year, it’s mixing it up by adding in a skateboarding expo by The Wheelhouse skate shop and an exhibition from CareFlight.
“It is just going to be a lot of fun,” said Susan Haas, executive director for RSVP.
In addition to the new events, the classic features also will make an appearance at the celebration. There will be food and craft vendors, live music, the carnival and fireworks on Monday and Haas said that they are expecting nearly 10,000 people to be in attendance during the four days.
“It is all about patriotism and community and support of others in the community,” Haas said. “It is also a great opportunity to learn more about RSVP and support our programs of service.”
RSVP is an organization of volunteers who help senior citizens maintain their independence and lend a helping hand to provide care for seniors in the community.
The event is free to the public, however patrons need to purchase tickets to ride the carnival rides.
“We want to encourage people to come and enjoy being outdoors with the food and the carnival and vendors,” Haas said. “Plus our nation’s independence is a cause of celebration. Most people have the day off anyway so you may as well come out and enjoy the day with everyone.”
The carnival is open Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. All day wristbands for the carnival are $30 and $5 discount coupons are available at the RSVP beer booth.
