The victim of a fatal crash has been identified as 46-year-old Milissa Victorino.
Victorino, a Carson City resident, was killed Wednesday night after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the street next to the Fairview Drive SlotWorld.
At 8:01 p.m. Carson City emergency crews responded to Fairview Drive and Gordon Street after a 1996 GMC Safari van, driven by 82-year-old Carson City resident Lyman Andrews, hit Victorino in the marked crosswalk with the right front end of his vehicle. Andrews was traveling southbound on Fairview approaching Gordon in the slow lane, officials said.
Carson City Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel said the woman was walking with a male companion when the van, driving southbound hit the woman, throwing her about 40 feet. The man was able to get out of the way of the passing vehicle.
Onlookers performed CPR until Carson City fire was able to take over. She was transported to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center where she died.
The street was closed from Highway 50 to Gordon as Nevada Highway Patrol investigated. The speed limit in the area is 35 mph. It is undetermined whether Andrews or Victorino were impaired at the time of the accident.
The Sheriff’s Office reports this is the second fatal accident in the area this year.
On Jan. 27 a pedestrian was struck by a hit and run driver at Brown Street and Highway 50, just two blocks away.
That victim later died at Renown Medical Center in Reno, and the driver was later identified. This is also an area where extensive enforcement activities have taken place in the last year to include pedestrian crosswalk enforcement operations.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds pedestrians to constantly be aware of vehicle traffic while crossing the streets, especially at night.
While you may have the right-away in the crosswalk, there are no guarantees the driver of a vehicle sees you crossing.
Sergeant Dave Cox of the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (MIRT) is investigating this incident.
