There weren’t too many surprises in the first track and field meet of the season on Saturday.
But the future of this season looks bright for both the boys and girls.
Fallon took second in both divisions as Fernley won the boys 97-94 over Fallon and the girls 93-85 in the four-team meet that also featured Dayton and South Tahoe.
“We’re about where we usually are,” Fallon boys coach Steve Heck said. “You’re trying to do some base work. Kids are sore. Kids are tired. It’s what we expected at this point. We have a hard working group.”
Reid Clyburn took second in the 100-meter dash in 12.48, less than a quarter of a second from winning the event. Drake Copley (12.71), Colton Peterson (12.81) and Cade Vercellotti (12.82) finished sixth through eight. Peterson took second in the 200 in 24.61, while Broder Thurston (26.04) finished seventh and Copley (26.15) was ninth.
In the 400, Fallon took third through sixth with Thurston (57.30), Dustin Hopkins (1:00.07), Justin Cathey (1:02.69) and JR Demillo (1:03.67) leading the Greenwave. Tristen Thomson almost broke 2 minutes in the 800, finishing in 2:00.27, but he took first in the 1600 in 4:38.20. Joseph Terry took third in the 3200 in 11:24.22.
Vercellotti was fourth in the 110 hurdles in 18.46 and teammate Trevor Brown followed in fifth in 19.93. Clyburn was third in the 300 hurdles in 45.89 while Jordan Boothe (48.49) and Brown (50.84) finished sixth and seventh.
Fallon won the 4x400 relay but took second in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays, and third in the 4x200. The 4x400 team included Thomson, Clyburn, Peterson and Thurston, while Vercellotti, Conner Nelson, Clayton Steelmon and Peterson were on the 4x100 team. Copley, Mike Anderson, Davis Koenig and Terry were on the 4x400 team, and the 4x200 team included Copley, Steelmon, Ryan Bitter and Brown.
TJ Mauga won the discus with a mark of 156-4 feet and took second in the shot put with a throw of 46-2. Justin Marlin finished third in discus with a throw of 106-1 and Billy Coleman was fifth with a mark of 102-1. Taylen Cordes (34-10), Coleman (33-8) and Marlin (33-5) finished in the top 10 in shot put.
“To come out and do that was tremendous,” Heck said of Mauga’s discus throw.
Nathaniel Klein (9 feet), Jordan Booth (8-6) and Thurston (8) finished fifth through seventh in the pole vault, while Vercellotti and John Kirkland finished in the top five of the high jump. Vercellotti took second with a jump of 5-6 and Kirkland was fourth at 5-2. Clyburn and Conner Nelson (17-4.25, each) and Koenig (17-2.5) finished second, third and fifth, respectively in the long jump while Nelson won the triple jump at 36-7.5. Koenig was second at 36-4.5 while Ryan Bitter was fourth at 34-10.5.
For the girls, Fallon dominated the jumping events, including claiming the first eight places in the triple jump and six of the first eight in the long.
“For what it is, I was really surprised,” Fallon girls coach Paul Orong said. “For them to come together for the first time, I was really pleased.”
Whitney Skabelund won both the triple and long with marks of 32-3.5 and 15-7.5. Misaki Clare (30-3), Sierra Hickox (29-0.5), Emily Evett (27-8.5) and Cassidy East (27-7.25) finished in the top five of the triple jump. Brynlee Shults (14-8.5) and Evett (13-5.75) followed Skabelund in the triple jump. Shults took second in the high jump at 4-6, and Caitlin Knox was third in the pole vault at 6-6.
Misaki Clare won both the shot put and discus with marks of 29-7 and 89-7, respectively, while Lillie Wohle (26-9.5) was third in the shot put and Gracy Lisanti (81) was fifth in discus.
Skabelund took second in the 200 in 29.64, Mayla Dahl was fourth in the 400 in 1:09.73 and Chloe Overlie finished fourth in the 800 in 2:44.46. Overlie also took second in the 1600 in 6:26.17 and Melanie Nuckolls was sixth in 6:37.45. Amanda Pursley (16:03.19) and Jeanne Anderson (16:40.79) finished third and fourth in the 3200.
Skabelund took second in the 300 hurdles in 51.70 and Shelby Hickox was fourth in 56.30. Hickox led Fallon in the 100 hurdles in 20.65, followed by Elizabeth Ebner in 21.23.
Fallon took second in the 4x800 relay and third in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. The 4x800 team included Overlie, Shelby Hickox, Pursley and Nuckolls, while Sierra Hickox, Evett, Allie Lister and Caitlin Knox competed on the 4x100 team. Evett, Lister, Hickox and Dahl were on the 4x800 team.
