SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: USS Nevada did state proud

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those adopted Nevadans who served over the years on the USS Nevada, which celebrated its 100th anniversary last week. Thanks to the courage of those who were on that ship, the USS Nevada survived Pearl Harbor and those on the vessel went on to serve heroically throughout World War II. Also to those who lost their lives serving on the vessel. They will never be forgotten.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City Ron Gutzman, who was named Nevada’s Veteran of the Month. Gutzman has spent a lifetime of service in the military, to veterans and to philanthropic causes.

WOODEN NICKEL: More of an opinion really — although we don’t have a solution other than to say this — the whole process of selecting our nominees to run for president of the United States needs to change to make sure the voters are the ones who actually have a say. The problem — and the arrogance — is summed up in this one statement: “The media has created the perception that the voters choose the nomination. That’s the conflict here,” Curly Haugland, an unbound GOP delegate from North Dakota, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Wednesday. “The rules are still designed to have a political party choose its nominee at a (national) convention.” He even questioned why primaries and caucuses are held.
