To honor the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the battleship USS Nevada, the Nevada State Museum is presenting a lecture by Reno Judge Chuck Weller, historian for the Reno Chapter of the U.S. Navy League, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24.
Weller’s “The Battle Born History of the USS Nevada” talk is part of the museum’s monthly Frances Humphrey Lecture Series. He will speak about all the ships that have borne that name, with particular emphasis on the battleship that saw action during World War II at Pearl Harbor, Alaska, Normandy, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The present USS Nevada also will be described. Several artifacts from the World War II ship are in the museum’s collection and on display.
Admission is $8 for adults and free for museum members and ages 17 and younger. For more information, contact Robert Nylen at rnylen@nevadaculture.org or 775-687-4810, ext. 245. The museum is at 600 N. Carson St.
