The new Churchill County High School auxiliary gym hosted its first event Saturday since the ribbon cutting one day prior. The annual Rock and Jock Basketball Extravaganza and Alumni Tournament raised funds for the CCHS basketball program.
The tournament was a unified effort between alumnus Terri Hicks, Wave boys basketball coach Brad Barton, alumnus Jake Johnston and numerous volunteers over the last two months. The event raised more than $1,800 for the program, more than twice as much as last year’s tournament according to Hicks and Barton.
The men’s alumni championship victors included the team of Billy Sorensen, Pete Paul, Jeff Evett, Johnston, Aaron Evett and Brian Perkins. The six man squad edged the team of Aarik Wilson, Timmy and Gavin Sorensen, Shannon Davis, Tony Guillen, Derek Johnson and Abe Schank in a 74-73 nail biter. The final score, after members of the crowd donated to the program to buy free throws for victorious team, was a decisive 94-73.
The women’s championship pit alumni against faculty, however, in the absence of enough players to fill out two teams. The faculty team toppled the alumni with the help of a 10-point shot from the Gurka at midcourt by Barton and a 3-pointer by Hicks in the last six seconds which cinched the game, 86-84.
Hicks also won the 3-point contest, donating half of the earnings back to the program.
