The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is advising drivers to be cautious of speeds in the school zones around town.
While school is still in session for several more weeks, drivers need to be paying attention to the 15 mile per hour posted limit or flashing lights when entering the school zones, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
“15 mph may seem like an eternity when driving in the zones but imagine how you would feel should you strike a child who is crossing the street,” McDaniel said. “Where crossing guards are posted, pay attention to their directions. They are in place to keep you and the children safe.”
Drivers need to be cautious of children crossing the street not at crosswalks as well, as they aren’t always focusing on the road as they should be either.
McDaniel advises parents should show children how to properly cross the street utilizing the crosswalks and the rules of walking alongside the roadways.
Drivers also need to be cautious of other vehicles in the school zones and not to tailgate, even in the slow speeds, in case the vehicle in front needs to stop suddenly to avoid hitting a child crossing the road.
“Put down the cell phone and pay attention to your driving and the activities that are going on around you,” McDaniel said. “Our children are depending on you to drive with care.”
