The biggest fundraiser in Greenwave athletics invades the community once again.

The Greenwave Takedown wrestling booster club will host the annual Night of Fights on May 21 at 5 p.m at the Gym at Venturacci Park.

“Our booster club is the best around and they do a tremendous job getting things organized and in gear,” Fallon wrestling coach Trevor de Braga said. “This is our only fundraiser for wrestling and it’s definitely one of the best in town. The money raised helps us with tournaments, travel, equipment, team gear and spending money on away trips.”

The NOF has been a mainstay for more than 15 years since its inception and has delivered year after year. The boxing doesn’t disappoint and the community packs the gym every May. All proceeds benefit the wrestling program, which won its first-ever state title in February. The funds help offset the costs for equipment, clothing and travel.

Last year’s event, which was held at the Venturacci Park gym for the first time and seats 800, featured Fallon high school boxers squaring off against one another. The city donated the boxing ring, valued at more than $1,000, and will do so again this year. Sixteen bouts were on last year’s slate, along with two co-main events, as the boxers work with coaches leading up to the event. Boxers are ranked based on skill and experience to determine who gets top billing.

“We just started practice this week so it’s hard to say how many fights at this point,” de Braga said.

For this year’s round, the Fallon Convention Center will host the annual Calcutta auction on May 17 when local businesses and individuals will get to bid on the high-school boxers. Five days later, boxers will parade into the gym and fight for bragging rights as they compete in three 1-minute round bouts.

“Three 1-minute rounds sounds simple but it’s the most exhausting thing I did in high school,” said de Braga, who won the NOF in each of his last three years. “You get to help out the wrestling team, have fun and get to box, which I never did in my life until my sophomore year of high school.”

VIP tables for six are available for $250, which includes ring-side seating, BBW tri-tip dinner, beverages and dessert. The name of the party or business will also be displayed on a large screen throughout the event and mentioned in the NOF program.
