Former Director of the Nevada Department of Corrections and current Nevada State Prison Preservation Society President, Glen Whorton, and Society Vice President Robin Bates will update the Leisure Hour Club membership on the status of the historic Nevada State Prison located in Carson City. The presentation will be at the club’s next dinner meeting on Wednesday, May 18.
The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society (NSPPS) is a nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and maintain the decommissioned Nevada State Prison for education about its history and use.
Having started his correctional career at the Nevada State Prison as a prison guard in 1973, and working his way up to the top spot in Nevada’s prison system before retiring, Whorton knows every nook and cranny of Carson’s historic prison and is excited to highlight NSP as Carson City and Nevada’s newest historic attraction.
During the presentation, Whorton and Bates will share their insights on the status of the prison as a historic sight, tourist destination, and a classic image of Nevada. Information will include the latest about tours of the Nevada State Prison and the need for additional financial support and guides.
If you would like to attend this dinner/presentation event, call the Leisure Hour Club at 775-400-2647 before Thursday, May 12 to make a reservation. The presentation is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom. Reservations for the meeting and dinner are required.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously operating social organization. Continuing to celebrate its 119th year, the organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.
