Old Yank of the Lake. Yank has the reputation of being the greatest liar of his time. He went to the Lake 30 or 40 years ago and established himself in a log cabin near the site of the present Tallac House, his only capital was a buckskin suit, an axe, a few pounds of bacon and a shotgun, pot metal, single barrel. He hunted deer and foxes. It was on the old Placerville stage route that was a favorite stopping place for travelers. He saved his money until he was able to build a hotel, which later burned. He went to work with a reliable old broad axe and made another home where he lived with his wife, with a spare room for his friends, a genial fireplace and old time mountain hospitality. Through all his misfortunes and hard luck a man of his energy should be the first to send down his advertisement to the Appeal. When anyone asks him how he has managed to keep his head above water, he tells them that it is the advertising that has done it.

The fire started under the roof of the kitchen, the cause a mystery.
