The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is advising drivers to be cautious of motorcycles while on the roadways.

With the weather getting nicer, more motorcyclists will be on the roads, which can create a challenge for drivers because they can be difficult to see. As a driver, making sure to give motorcycles enough room to travel is key, along with being vigilant and double checking mirrors before changing lanes. When making left hand turns, be extra cautious and make sure the intersection is clear before turning.

As a motorcyclist, it’s also important to be courteous and safe while on the road. Sgt. Scott McDaniel said when riding your motorcycle remember to ask yourself these questions: As a motorcycle rider, are you doing all you can to ensure motorists see you and know your intentions when changing lanes? Are you maintaining a safe distance and making sure you can be seen in their mirrors?

McDaniel also recommends motorcyclists attend a riders course to get basic fundamentals in motorcycle operation, familiarity and skills. Some insurance companies give discounts to those who have completed such courses so this would be a good place to start if you’re considering becoming a rider.

“Many of the issues that occur on the roadways are due to inexperienced or unlicensed motorcycle riders,” McDaniel said.

If both riders and drivers make sure they are taking all safety precautions, everyone can work together to reduce vehicle versus motorcycle crashes.
