Memorial Day events to honor service members

Honoring the nation’s service members is the priority of Memorial Day weekend, and there are plenty of events in the area that plan to do so.

The Disabled American Veterans and other local veteran organizations will be putting U.S. Flags on veterans graves at Veterans Cemetery located in the Lone Mountain Cemetery at 4 p.m. Friday. Other groups who are assisting are local Elks Lodge, Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC), Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts. All youth groups are encouraged to participate. At this time a flag will be available to those who want to post one on veterans’ graves in other areas of the cemetery. Following Memorial Day activities at 4 p.m. Monday, May 30, flags will be removed from the graves. The public is encouraged to participate in placing and removing of the flags. American Legion Honor Guard Post 56 from Carson City and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8660 from Dayton are conducting a Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at Dayton Cemetery. All are welcome. For more information, call Gabe Koory at 775-246-0907 or 775-741-8416.

The Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment 630 of Carson City is honoring fallen Native American military veterans and current Native American service members at 10 a.m. Monday at Stewart Indian Cemetery on Clear Creek Road, east of Highway 395 and the Costco stoplight. The annual ceremony pays tribute to Native Americans who contributed to the U.S. military in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and at present.

Virginia City’s annual Celebration of Heroes Parade to honor veterans is taking place at noon Saturday, May 28 on C Street, the town’s main thoroughfare.

Parade entries include veterans groups, classic car clubs, equestrian groups and marching units. Parade entries are accepted until Friday, May 27. Download the parade form at VisitVirginiaCityNV.com, or call 775-847-7501.

Memorial Weekend also serves as the kick-off weekend for the V&T Railroad, running steam trains through the season starting Saturday, May 28. To see the schedule or to buy tickets, go to www.vtrailway.com.

Warren Engine Company members will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and sodas from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through Monday at the train depot at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

Gov. Brian Sandoval will be on hand at Northern Nevada Veterans Coalition’s Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30 at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, off Exit 48, in Fernley. The keynote speaker will be Staff Sgt. Steve Watson. A Chinook helicopter will be displayed in the ceremony. Organizers are encouraging attendees to arrive early. At 1 p.m. Monday, Carson City will honor service members with its annual service at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Outreach Center is hosting a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Desert Memorial Gardens in Silver Springs. The service includes a flag ceremony and religious and patriot readings. Coffee and donuts will be served following the event at the outreach center, 4280 Highway 50, Silver Springs.

Evergreen Gene’s, 1811 N. Carson St., is hosting its annual free Memorial Day barbecue, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, potato salad and all the trimmings, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Live entertainment will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Veterans and military personnel are offered a 25 percent discount on anything purchased on Monday.

The Carson Nugget is hosting a lineup of events throughout the weekend.

A live comedy performance by Justin Rivera will kick off festivities at 7 p.m. Friday, May 27. After the show the Sports Bar will be hosting live music by Escalade.

On Saturday, May 28, Escalade will return to the Sports Bar from 8 p.m. to midnight. An ATV will be raffled off at 9:30 p.m.

Events continue on Sunday, May 29, with a performance by Evolution, a Journey tribute band, in the Nugget’s Ballroom. Doors open at 7 p.m.
