Orphans of soldier funds: Miss Lizzie Bell collected a fund last fall to aid in establishing a “National Home” for the orphan children of soldiers killed in the late war. It has been transferred to the Ladies Protestant and Relief Society. The fund amounts to $7,451,50. (San Francisco Bulletin)

Where’s Fuji Park? It was designated as a recreation area for picnicking, barbecues and a place to take the children. The only trouble is you can’t find Fuji Park. There is a fine ornate gateway sign that adjoins the County Farm or the Job Corps Camp, the road passes by the gateway and no informative sign exists at the turnoff. Money for the establishment of the park was left to Ormsby County by the late Fuji (Mrs. Basil) Woon, and was a wish expressed in her will.

Charlie Buck: The Virginia City writer is providing her gift of writing to Carson City School children as part of “Project Challenge.” According to her, “It’s truly wonderful feeling when one of the children writes something that’s beautiful.”

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
