Douglas County voters reject gas, school tax ballot questions

Douglas County voters rejected both fuel indexing and a sales tax designed to help maintain the schools.

The two questions on the county ballot were both the result of state direction.

According to results including early, absentee and eight polling places both measures were being defeated with 61 percent of the electorate voting no.

The only other countywide races being fought in Douglas were for two school board seats.

B. Keith Byers led Mike Kiger with 66 percent of the vote to replace board trustee Cindy Trigg, who hit her term limit.

The race between Linda Gilkerson and Larry Lippmann was only slightly narrower, with Gilkerson receiving 58 percent of the vote.

East Fork Swimming Pool incumbents Kimberly Borgzinner and Mike Hardie held strong leads in that race. Early returns showed Douglas Robbins winning the third seat on the board that governs the Carson Valley Swim Center.

Minden-Gardnerville Sanitation District trustees Barbara Smallwood and Bob Allgeier also enjoyed strong leads over their opponents.

All three Minden Town Board incumbents, Glen Radtke, John Stephans and Bill Souligny, were well on their way to being re-elected.

Douglas County Republicans turned out for Donald Trump for president and Joe Heck for senate.

The last Democrat Douglas County voters elected to the presidency was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

County voters opposed background checks for guns and recreational marijuana, but voted for deregulation of energy and against taxing medical supplies.
