The annual Thanksgiving mission undertaken by both American Legion Post 16 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1002 is an opportunity for volunteers to give back to the community.

On Thanksgiving day, the American Legion relies on both military and civilian volunteers to pack food into containers and then drive routes to deliver hot meals to 136 senior citizens, an increase of 35 individuals from last year.

More than 30 volunteers including sailors and airmen from Naval Air Station Fallon volunteered. Across town at the VFW, volunteers — many of them veterans — began cooking turkeys and preparing side dishes early in the morning for an afternoon meal, which is offered annually to the community for free.
