Magnificent grapes: Our friend Billy Crandall who is now the Pioneer Company’s Agent in Placerville, sent a big parcel of grapes to one of his lady friends here, and she yesterday divided with us. Those which fell to our share were the handsomest, the largest and embraced the greatest variety that we have seen yet this year. — Thanks.

The politics that skulk under a non-partisan mask are the most despicable sort, and the kind that, ought to be watched the most. The non-partisan, Anti-Chinese League threw off its mask last Saturday night in an open proposition to run a political ticket. It’s the old Mugwamp gang of disappointed camp followers of the Republican party, warmed over again.

After comparing the records of all rifle clubs in the state, as prepared in the adjutant general’s office, Gov. Boyle has selected the Manhattan Rifle Club to represent Nevada in the famous national matches to be held in Jacksonville, Fla., this month. Perceval Nash and his team will leave Tonopah Saturday morning.

Barbara Franks, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. F.H. Morrison, and Robert Shriver, son of the Rev. A.G. Shriver, were married at 11 o’clock this morning at Donaldson Memorial at Zephyr Point, Lake Tahoe. The Rev. Mr. Shriver performed the wedding.

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church for Howard Hoffman, 62, a well-known law enforcement officer who died Sept. 30 in Carson. A resident of Carson for 25 years, Hoffman served as chief of police from 1947 to 1951 and became sheriff in 1958.

A consultant Wednesday unveiled a proposal for construction of a $94 million dam along the Carson River by Bodie Creek near the California and Nevada border south of Gardnerville.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
