Prep roundup: Carson volleyball rolls to win

RENO — With six tournament matches scheduled for Saturday and a showdown against Douglas looming on Tuesday, Carson High volleyball coach Robert Maw wanted to get a look at a lot of different combinations.

Wooster provided the perfect opportunity.

Carson rolled to a 25-7 win in the opening set, and then took the last two, 25-20 and 25-17, for its second sweep of the week Thursday at Congdon Gym.

It was the sixth time Carson has swept a 4A opponent this season. The Senators improved to 7-3 in league play.

“It was a good night,” Maw said. “The first set I saw what I wanted to see.

“We gave a lot of girls who don’t get a lot of court time a chance to play tonight. We used lineups where girls hadn’t been on the floor together. With the tournament and then Douglas, I didn’t want to take a chance. The girls are going to play a lot of volleyball on Saturday.”

Natalie Anderson set the tone in the first set when she served up two aces to spark a 5-0 run. After Wooster scored two straight points, the Senators struck for six straight thanks to two kills by Jaycie Roberts and one by Ari Schmidt. Wooster made three errors in the surge.

The Senators put the game out of reach with a 9-0 run for a 22-5 advantage. Roberts served up an ace and had a kill, Shea DeJoseph had two kills and Maya Vasquez had one.

“We passed the ball really well,” Maw said. “Natalie was connecting with the hitters. We were aggressive at the net.”

Anderson finished with 28 assists.

Wooster never mounted much of an offense, hitting a lot of down balls, and the Colts were never able to stop Roberts the entire match.

The second set was tied three times before Carson took control with a 12-3 run to take a 22-13 lead. DeJoseph had back-to-back kills as did Makenna Couste. Vasquez and Dajarrah Navarro had a kill apiece.

Wooster, behind the hitting of Allison Lawrence, scored seven straight to close the deficit to 22-20. Maw inserted Roberts back into the lineup, and she responded with two quick kills to restore order at 24-20. Vasquez blocked Annemarie Vogedes’ shot to end the second game.

Carson used an 11-5 surge in the third set to break open a tight 10-9 game and grab a 21-14 lead. Ku’ulei Haupu and Navarro had two kills each in that surge while Roberts, Stefanie Schmidt and Ari Schmidt added one each.

Wooster closed to 21-16 on two kiils, but the Senators scored four of the last five to close out the match.

The Senators hit a respectable .253 which pleased Maw. Roberts had nine kills while Haupu and Stefanie Schmidt added five each. Navarro and Stefanie Schmidt had four kills each.

BOYS TENNIS

Carson drops thriller

RENO — Carson High’s season ended one win short of the state tournament.

The Senators dropped a 10-9 decision to Damonte Ranch Thursday afternoon in the 4A semifinals.

After the nine singles sets and nine double sets, the teams were tied at 9. The teams tied 3-all in the tiebreaker, but the Mustangs were awarded the win on points, 35-32.

“It was a heartbreaking loss,” Carson coach Hal Wilkins said.

As usual, Carson’s doubles’ teams carried the load, accounting for eight of its nine wins.

Jayson Artz and Jared Barnard went 3-0 as did Nico Salm and Danny Dudley.

The No. 3 tandem of Stu McElhany and Alec Henricksen went 2-1.

The only win in singles came from Taylor Saarem, who went 1-2 on the day. Neither Brad Wiggins or Ryan Tomita was able to win a set.

The individual tournament starts next Tuesday. The top three singles finishers and doubles finishers qualify for state. Saarem and Artz are ranked No. 3 in doubles.

GIRLS TENNIS

Carson eliminated

RENO — The Senators’ season ended with a 13-5 loss to Reno in the semifinals.

It was the second time Carson lost to the powerhouse Huskies. No other information was provided.

VOLLEYBALL

Yerington outlasts Dayton in 5

YERINGTON — The Dust Devils lost to 2A power Yerington in five sets Wednesday — 24-26, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21 and 8-15.

“We played the best volleyball we have played since the season started,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson. “Each of my girls played hard and worked together. We ran out of steam in the fifth set.”

Makenna Olsen had eight blocks and 11 kills to lead Dayton. Hailey Spencer and Brianda Diaz played strong floor games with 23 and 20 digs, respectively. Kallie Strong finished with 41 assists. Ashley Mason had 10 kills as did Diaz, and Kassie Strong added nine kills.

Dayton hosts Spring Creek on Friday and Elko on Saturday.
