An exciting new venture partnership is being launched between the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS), Nevada Volunteers and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
“Nevada Vet Corp,” the newest Nevada veterans outreach program, will be recognized Wednesday from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City. On hand will be CNCS Chief Executive Officer Wendy Spencer, NDVS Director Kat Miller, City Manager Nick Marano, other dignitaries and statewide partners.
The public event joins established AmeriCorps VISTA members and Nevada Veteran Advocates (NVA) together with 20 new AmeriCorps State members to provide recognition for accomplishments and service commitments. These volunteers in service are working in urban, rural, and frontier regions to locate, inform, and serve Nevada’s over 300,000 veterans, as well as active military and family members.
“The mission of the Nevada Vet Corps is to improve the quality of life of veterans, military members, and their families across Nevada,” Miller said. “Nevada Vet Corps members have the charge to help improve the quality of life for low-income veterans, veterans with disabilities, veterans in care and their families, and unemployed veterans.”
Using direct community outreach, Nevada Vet Corps members will conduct assessments and surveys designed to capture gaps in benefits and services to gather valuable, real-time data. Additionally, Nevada Vet Corps members will develop greater community awareness through outreach at trainings, events, through social media networking, and involvement with a growing number of veterans community councils throughout Nevada.
Nevada Vet Corps members also will partner with trained NVA volunteers to ensure veterans and their families understand potential benefits and available government and community services.
“The information collected from these activities will assist in the evaluation of both the program objectives and goals and support plans,” said Nevada Vet Corps Program Director Tamalyn Gee. “Working closely with the veterans, active military, and their dependents means NDVS will gain real-time information to determine the effectiveness of programs, document achieved objectives, service delivery issues, and make changes to improve program effectiveness. “
