RENO — Carson High extended its Sierra League lead with a 3-1 win over Galena Tuesday afternoon in a battle of the league’s top two teams.

Carson improved to 11-0-1, extending its lead over Galena to four points.

Mallory Otto scored a season-best three goals, the second hat trick by a CHS player this year. Yanitzia Perez had three in a recent win over Wooster. Otto has 13 goals this season. She has scored in every game but two.

“We played well today,” coach Greg Lehman said. “It was a tough game. I thought Valerie Sue (Meyer), Hailey (Palotas) and Galilea (Cid) were outstanding.”

Carson visits Manogue Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Manogue beats Douglas

MINDEN — Two goals inside the final three minutes before halftime stood as the difference Tuesday afternoon when Bishop Manogue posted a 2-0 Sierra League girls soccer victory against Douglas.

Mallory Benna scored on a header in the 37th minute and Mikaela Woodhead converted a free kick in the 40th minute as Manogue broke up a scoreless struggle between rivals who met for the region tournament championship last year.

The Miners won that championship contest in a snow blizzard, 1-0, and their win on Tuesday was important as well. Manogue (4-7-1 league) is battling Wooster for fourth-place and a berth in the playoffs, while Douglas (8-3-1 league, 9-4-1 overall) stands third.

Four of Manogue’s seven losses have been decided by one goal, including a 1-0 verdict at home against Douglas on Sept. 24. “We’ve had a lot of close games, but I knew the girls could win,” said Manogue coach Shelly Gamble, a 1999 Carson High graduate. “It’s just been a matter of putting the pieces together and they came together nicely today against a really talented Douglas team.”

DAYTON — The Dust Devils dropped a 2-1 non-league decision to Sparks Tuesday afternoon.

Nicole Washington gave Dayton its only lead with a goal in the 32nd minute off a pass from Karla Montano. Sparks tied it in the 37th minute and went ahead in the 45th minute. Kristina Mason had 13 saves for Dayton.
