Cow picked up: Mr. Michael Spooner notifies somebody by an advertisement in today’s Appeal that he has a stray cow, peculiarly marked, on his place, on the Lake Bigler Road, in Douglas County. The said cow has been there since June 1. Whoever owns her had better be looking after his property.

The veto of the Militia Bill, on which our great and good Governor prizes himself so much, just knocked this state out of about $10,000 in cash. The 48th Congress passed a bill distributing among the states a fund for the support of a state militia; and they in return asked that each local member of every company take the oath of allegiance to the constitution of the state and the United States. A sentiment was manufactured that it was a scheme to turn the guns against the Miner’s Union and reduce their wages ...

A full house greeted the two Republican speakers at the C. and C. Theater Saturday night, but it is safe to say that considerably more than half the audience was Democratic and came with the distinct purpose of learning what arguments the speakers would put up in answer to the achievements of the Wilson administration.

A rape convict from Las Vegas was back at the State Prison Saturday after sneaking out in a garbage can, then meekly surrendering himself to a housewife. The 18-year-old called on a New Empire woman and requested she call officers less than nine hours after he escaped.
