Prep roundup: CHS girls soccer closing in on league title

Carson High moved one step closer to its second straight Sierra League regular-season title with a 2-0 win over Damonte Ranch in a girls soccer match at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex Tuesday night.

The win, which came on Senior Night, moved the Senators to 13-0-1 on the season with matches against Wooster (Saturday) and Douglas (next Tuesday) left. Carson needs to win just one of its last two matches to win the title outright.

“It was Senior Night, and the girls were really pumped up,” coach Greg Lehman said. “We had some early opportunities, but we didn’t finish them. I would have liked to have seen us finish those early chances.”

Carson had a good run in the opening minute, but didn’t get a shot off. Two minutes later, Isabella Wakeling missed wide right.

Carson broke the scoreless tie on a own goal when a cross by Wakeling bounced off a Damonte defender into the net in the 24th minute.

The Senators made it 2-0 in the 31st minute when Lauren Hudak scored off an assist by Mallory Otto.

Carson got off four shots in the second half, and the best opportunity was from Sophia Ruedy, whose blast went over the crossbar.

The Senators had three or four runs in the second half, but each time were whistled offsides. One of the infractions wiped out a goal in the 70th minute.

Damonte managed just three shots.

VOLLEYBALL

Carson loses thriller

RENO — The Senators dropped the first two sets to Bishop Manogue and fought back to win the next two before losing 15-12 in the final set Tuesday night in a 4A match.

Manogue won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21 before Carson rallied to win 25-15 and 25-18. Carson was unable to overcome seven unforced errors in the final set.

Carson returns to action Thursday night at 6 p.m. at home against Damonte Ranch. It will be Pinkout Night, and fans are urged to wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness.

“Despite the loss, I was pleased with our effort tonight,” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “I thought we sent a strong message that we came to play and that we’re capable of playing with them.

“Jaycie (Roberts) was outstanding tonight (24 kills and 18 digs). They were trying to double and triple block her. Shea (DeJoseph) stepped up tonight (14 kills and 6 digs). Abby (Pradere) and Jaycie were outstanding on defense. They got a lot of balls up. Dajarrah Navarro (15 block) and Ku’lei Haupu (10 kills) played well at the net. We made some adjustments midway through the second set. We did a great job defensively.”

Keelin Pilgrim had a nice night with six kills and 10 digs. Pradere finished with 21 digs and six assists, Roberts added 18 digs and setter Natalie Anderson had 47 assists and seven digs.

Muckers sweep Whittell

VIRGINIA CITY — Chelsea Nevin had eight kills and 15 assists to spark Virginia City to a 25-15, 27-25 and 25-17 sweep Tuesday night in a 1A match.

Kaitlin Hames had 20 digs and six kills, Bethany Fuller added eight kills and 15 digs, and Kim Tlapa added 40 digs and two kills.

TENNIS

Two CHS teams left

RENO — Carson High has just two doubles teams left in the NIAA 4A regional tournament at Bishop Manogue High School.

In boys doubles, Danny Dudley and Nico Salm reached the semifinals with a 7-6, 5-7 and 6-1 win. They meet Reno’s Chase Gonfiantini and Nick Rinehart of Reno in today’s semifnals at 1 p.m. The news wasn’t so good for third-seeded Taylor Saarem and Jayson Artz, who dropped a 7-6 and 6-2 decision to sixth-seeded Marlin Brucato and Dawson Martin of Spanish Springs.

Emma Breeding and Anya Woodbury reached the semis with a 6-2, 6-1 win. They meet Reno’s Jazlynn Parker and Jill Rovetti in the semis at 1 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY

CHS JV girls 2nd

SPARKS — Carson High’s JV girls cross country team placed three runners in the top five en route to a second-place finish at the Northern 4A JV Championships at Golden Eagle Regional Park Tuesday afternoon.

Douglas won the event with 54 points, four ahead of Carson. Reno was third with 65.

Gabriella Fernandez took first, covering the 5,000-meter course in 21:13, 31 seconds ahead of teammate Jaidyn Shepard. Ava Covington was fourth in 22:16. Maeve Hoerth was the fourth CHS finisher at 19th in 24:22. Arietis Fisher-Burns was 37th in 25:18.

Carson’s JV boys were fourth with 117 points. McQueen won with 41 followed by Spanish Springs 59 and Douglas 76.

Zach Sever was third in 18:39, Gabe Covington was 13th in 19:12, Adan Garcia was 31st in 19:39, Hunter Rauh was 33rd in 19:45 and Jayson Legott was 38th in 19:53. Jared Cartier was 40th in 19:55.

GOLF

Coronado wins 4A state

Victoria Estrada and Ashley Lung shot a 146 and 151, respectively, to lead Coronado to the NIAA 4A state golf title Tuesday afternoon at the Eagle Valley-West Course.

Coronado shot a 615, 63 shots ahead of Bishop Gorman. Palo Verde was third at 699 followed by Reno at 706, Spanish Springs at 734 and Green Valley at 828.

Estrada shot a 1-under par 71 Tuesday and Lung shot a 2-under 70, 11 strokes better than her first-round 81. Sami Penor was fifth at 157 and Gabby Denunzio tied for ninth at 161. Coronado shot a 298 on Tuesday.

The top northern Nevada finisher was Jada McAlister of Spanish Springs with a 159, good for sixth place.
