Prep roundup: CHS boys fall; Breeding, Woodbury make state

Carson High’s boys soccer team dropped into third place after a 2-1 Senior Night loss to Damonte Ranch Wednesday at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson is 10-4 in league and has 30 points. Wooster is 10-3-1 and has 31 points. Carson and Wooster meet Saturday at 10:45 a.m. at Carson. If Carson wins, it will move back into second place. If Wooster wins, it will clinch second place and a first-round home game on Oct. 31.

Carson attempted 18 shots, 12 of those in the second half, and at least nine of those were quality shots. Damonte had just three shots on goal, but Yameer Perez’s goal inside of two minutes snapped the 1-all tie and gave the Mustangs a critical win. Damonte is fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot.

The game-winning goal was unfortunate. Keeper Jose Rodriguez came out and tried to clear the ball, but didn’t succeed. Perez lofted a shot over Rodriguez into the net. Just two minutes earlier the same thing happened but Christian Martinez was able to clear the ball before it crossed the goal line.

The Senators had three shots, two by Guillermo Hernandez, but were unable to score.

The last couple of minutes summed up Carson’s night, or at least the final 40 minutes.

The Senators peppered Damonte’s goal, but Kyle Wilson made several sensational saves.

“We did dominate,” CHS coach Frank Martinez said. “We just could not put the ball in. We have to play smarter.

“Time was running down, and Jose was just trying to speed things up and the pass went to the other guy. He could have stayed in and cleared it by rolling it out. The key was that we were unable to finish and put the ball away. Their keeper is good, the best in the league.”

Carson started its seniors, and that led to a flat offense for the bulk of the first half. Carson, despite getting off six shots, was out of sync.

Damonte snapped the scoreless tie when Peter Garrett was called for a foul in the penalty box. Hector Hagelsieb converted the penalty kick against senior Jesse Lopez, who volunteered to play keeper.

In the second half, Rogelio Herrera hit the left post in the 42nd minute, and Efren Ramirez’s shot a minute later was tipped over the crossbar by Wilson. In the 55th minute, Wilson came out of the box and took out Guillermo Perez-Morris. Ramirez converted the ensuing PK, tying the match at 1.

The game remained tied until Perez scored.

Dayton tops Fernley

DAYTON — Victor Gomez and Jorddy Diaz scored a goal apiece to give the Dust Devils a 2-1 win over Fernley in a key 3A boys soccer match-up on Wednesday.

Dayton remained in first place with a 5-1-1 record going into a two-game road trip at White Pine on Friday and West Wendover on Saturday.

“We played a lot smarter this game against Fernley,” Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo said. “We maintained possession and passed the ball around more which created more scoring opportunities.”

Gomez’s goal came early in the first half, and Diaz made it 2-0 in the second half. Ten minutes later Fernley scored its only goal. Keper Gabriel Dums had nine saves. He has allowed just two goals all year. Johnny Torres, Marco Torres, Diaz and Bryan Aguilera played well defensively.

Carson duo in state

RENO — Anya Woodbury and Emma Breeding qualified for the 4A state tournament by finishing second in the regional championship Wednesday at Bishop Manogue.

Breeding and Woodbury knocked off Reno’s duo of Jazlynn Parker and Jill Rovetti 7-5 and 6-4 in the semis before losing 6-7, 6-3, 6-7 in the finals to fourth-seeded Rose Berry and Halle Turek of Bishop Manogue.

The news wasn’t so good on the boys side, however.

Danny Dudley and Nico Salm lost in the third-place match to sixth-seeded Marlin Brucato and Dawson Martin 3-6, 6-7 and 2-6. The winner finished third and qualified for state. The Carson duo had lost 6-1 and 6-0 to Reno’s Chase Gonfiantini and Nick Rinehart, the eventual region champs.

Breeding and Woodbury will open play in the state tournament at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Caughlin Club in Reno.

VOLLEYBALL

Dayton sweeps

SOUTH TAHOE — Dayton avenged a homecourt loss to South Tahoe in four games by sweeping the Vikings on their home court 25-23, 25-20, 25-20. “I am so impressed at the way my team is working together to finish each match,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “It is so exciting to see higher level volleyball and good fun play.”

Dayton is now 10-3 in league and faces a key match at home on Friday against league power Truckee.

Against South Tahoe, Ashley Mason had 10 kills, Brianda Diaz had 13 kills and 10 digs, Hailey Wells had 15 digs, Kali Lampshire had seven digs, Kallie Strong had 29 assists and 11 digs, Kassie Strong had two blocks.
