Fallon’s dog days of summer

Ah, Labor Day weekend, the Cantaloupe Festival and dog days. What a great time we had last weekend! It was fun to see all the dogs and their people come to the fair grounds.

The highlight for us was the dog contests. Watson loved seeing all of his friends.

We had some wonderful contestants who came prepared for stiff competition. The winners are

largest, Tank and Roxie; smallest, Gucci Bug; cutest, Marvin; best costume, Remi; best trick, Widget and Gucci Bug; best recovery, Freckles (who just had hip surgery).

Thank you to everyone who entered your BFF (best furry friend) in the contests. I want to mention Shaunna who brought her whole family to the contests. We enjoyed seeing BJ, Mia and Tinker. Thanks also to Big R for supplying all of the prizes for our dog show. The hats, toys and food were appreciated by all.

Everyone who has a dog is a winner. Will Rogers once said, “If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.” I agree with him, dogs make life heavenly.

We have exciting news at CAPS. Thanks to Tom Graham, we are now partnering with Chewy and the SPCA of Reno who will supply food for our shelter. Tom Graham who worked so hard to find a steady supplier of food for CAPS is this week’s Who’s Who. We are profoundly thankful for his efforts! A big Paws Up to Tom.

Our wonderful news continues with an anonymous donation of $2,500. To whoever you are, you have answered our prayers. Thank you from the bottom of all our furry hearts. We send you a bushel of wags and kisses.

We also want to thank all of the community members who stepped up to the plate and put dog food on it for our guests. It is an absolute joy to know that the people who share our community are so kind, generous and giving.

Of course, without a column in our newspaper it would be much harder to get the news to you. Thank you to Steve Ranson and the Lahontan Valley News for giving us a voice in the community.

WHO’S NEW AT THE CAPS’ ZOO?

Birdie is a beautiful two-year-old boxer mix. She has large expressive eyes that look like she spent hours on eyeliner and mascara. With her lovely white coat she is quite the diva. Birdie loves people and male dogs. She is looking for someone who will love her. Plan to come out and meet her because she’s eager to take you for a walk.

CAPS’ NEWS AND EVENTS

CAPS will be at Walmart on Sept. 24 along with Ki at our Kissin’ Booth. Please come by and give our boy a big hug and kiss. We have caps, short-sleeved T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts, so please check them out before or after greeting our canine volunteers.

Flower Tree Nursery is again raffling a 20-gallon live Christmas tree. The raffle tickets are available at Flower Tree, and they are $1 for one ticket and $5 for six tickets. Be sure to get your tickets soon. The drawing date will be held on Dec. 6, and the winner doesn’t have to be present to win. The winner from the Sept. drawing will be announced next week.
