Carson boys soccer rolls against Reed

SPARKS — Carson High remained unbeaten with an easy 6-1 decision over Reed in a 4A crossover boys soccer match at the Dave Nolte Track Facility Saturday morning.

Carson improved to 3-0 in league and 4-0 overall heading into next Wednesday’s match at Hug.

The Senators, who played without keeper Efren Ramirez (family obligations) got three goals from Guillermo Hernandez and two from Osvaldo Gomez plus a solid effort from Jose Rodriguez in goal.

“We moved the ball crisply when our starters were in there,” said CHS coach Frank Martinez. “We were moving well. We practice a lot on possessing the ball.

“I was happy with the first half. It (scoring four goals) allowed us to put in the back-ups.”

Carson got off to a quick start courtesy of Gomez and Hernandez, who scored two goals apiece.

Gomez scored off a Hernandez assist in the 11th minute, and five minutes later Hernandez made it 2-0.

The pace slowed after that, but Gomez and Hernandez scored their second goals in the 28th and 32nd minute respectively to make it 4-0. Reed scored its only goal in the 34th minute. Reed managed just four first-half shots.

Eddie Porter made it 5-1 with a goal in the 62nd minute, and Hernandez completed his hat trick in the 67th minute.

“We are getting to know each other better,” Gomez said. “We are starting to communicate better, and that helps us.”

Rodriguez had three official saves, but he came out of goal and deflected a couple of other balls.

“Jose came up big,” Martinez said. “He told me Friday he wasn’t sure if he was ready. He didn’t get tested that much, but he got to three balls that would have been goals.

Martinez did say Rogelio Herrera, who played briefly on Wednesday, will not play the rest of the season.

• The Carson JV boys won 4-3, as Angel Gonzalez had all four goals and Adrian Torres had all four assists.

Dayton blanks W. Wendover

DAYTON — Victor Gomez scored both Dayton goals in a league-opening 2-0 win Saturday afternoon.

Johnny Torres and Jason Duran were credited with assists.

“We knew this was going to be a tough game since last weekend they beat us in the finals of the White Pine tournament,” DHS coach Luis Melgarejo. “We wanted to make our comeback so our team was focused and determined to win the game.

“We were very aggressive and more organized as a team. Our defense was strong today.”

Torres stood out in the back and keeper Gabriel Dums had a good game. West Wendover had just six shots on goal. Isaac Gudarrama was solid in the midfield.

GIRLS SOCCER

Carson rolls Raiders

SPARKS — Yanitzia Galvin and Valerie Sue Meyer scored two goals apiece to lead the Senators to a 9-1 win Saturday afternoon. Carson improved to 3-0.

Lauren Hudak, Mallory Otto, Isabell Wakeling, Brynn Lehman and Sophia Ruedy all added a goal apiece.

Carson dominated from the outset, as Galvin scored in the opening minute, and the Senators got off 26 shots on the day.

It was the second time in three contests Carson scored a quick goal. Wakeling scored in 22 seconds in the win against Reno.

“We came out on fire,” CHS coach Greg Lehman said. “We created opportunities and finished them.

“I like to see the quick goal, but sometimes you can get overconfident when you score that quick. We followed that up with more quality goals.”

Carson led 4-1 at the half.

Dayton, West Wendover tie

DAYTON — Kristina Mason scored in the 75th minute to give Dayton a 2-2 tie against visiting West Wendover in the 3A opener Saturday.

Mason’s goal was assisted by Gemma Acevedo and wiped out a 2-1 deficit.

Natalie Villafana opened the scoring in the 17th minute on an assist from Perla Vega. West Wendover scored two unaswered goals to take a 2-1 lead before Mason’s score.

“All the girls played well,” coach Jared Miklich said. “I thought we controlled the ball for most of the game. I’m proud of their performance and effort through the entire game.”

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson at Nevada Union

GRASS VALLEY — Gabby Fernandez and Jaiden Sheperd placed first and fourth, respectively, to lead Carson to a fourth-place finish at the Nevada Union Invitational Saturday morning.

Hunter Rauh finished fourth in the JV boys race, while Ethan Byasse was 17th.

The varsity boys finished in 11th as a team. Logan Mead placed 50th and Adam Flaten was 64th.

Dayton boys take 10th

TAHOE CITY — Dayton High boys finished 10th out of 17 teams at North Tahoe High School.

J.J. Ply was the top individual for Dayton, finishing 25th over the 3.7-mile course. Jason Logan was 41st in 24:08, taking two minutes off his time from last year. Madsen Evans was 59th in 25:09 and Jared Logan was 84th in 26:07. Austin Duarte was 86th in 26:10.

In the freshman boys race, McClain Simon was 44th in 27:16 over the 3.2-mile race. In the sophomore boys race, Logan Allander was 25th in 22.36 for 3.2 miles and Andrew Matthews was 43rd in 24:41.

Dayton hosts next week’s meet.

VOLLEYBALL

Nevada’s fast start continues

RENO — Nevada continued its winning ways with a 25-18, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-15 win over Southern Utah on the second day of the Wolf Pack Tournament at the Virginia Street Gym Saturday afternoon.

Madison Morrell had 15 kills and Kathryne Groenweghe added 14. Dayton grad Madison Foley played a great defensive game with 15 digs.

On Friday, Nevada came from a two-set deficit to knock off Gonzaga 14-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 15-13. Morrell had 18 kills and 14 digs and Foley had 16 kills and 14 digs.

Nevada played UC Davis in the final game, but results were unavailable at press time.

Dayton spikers roll on

ELKO — Brianda Diaz had 16 kills and 16 digs, and Makenna Olsen added 13 kills to lead the Dust Devils to a 25-15, 25-16, 18-25, 23-25 and 15-5 win over Elko on Saturday. Dayton improved to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in league.

“We were strong in the first two sets and then rolled into the third and fourth sets where we made a lot of mental mistakes and didn’t work together as a team,” coach Monica Halverson said. “Elko came out strong in the third and fourth games, and they placed their short tips and placed their hits off the hands of our blockers.”

Rebecca Mason had six digs and four kills, Kassie Strong had eight kills, Kallie Strong delivered 45 assists and nine digs, Hailey Wells had 14 digs and Ashley Mason had eight kills and six digs.

• Elko won the freshman match 25-19 and 25-11. Shaye Thompson led Dayton with two kills and four aces.

• Elko won the JV match 25-14 and 25-21. Tamia Powell had nine digs, six assists, a kill and an ace. Taylor Kinney added seven digs and two aces.
